460 vs 6.9 desel witch is better for towing?

i have been kicking this around for a few months now
i picked up a 1978 f250 2wheel 4 door i pull my trailer with
it has a 400 auto in it and i am not a big fan of
so i am thinking about a swap
idea #1
stock 460
fuile heads
low rpm cam for towing
idea#
6.9 desel
no mods maybe turn up the pump and run a open exaust

both will be a auto c6 tranny
with would give me better mpg
and towing power i pull a pulling truck around with all the wights for it
so it is a heavy load truck with all the weight is about 7000lbs not counting my heavy trailer
and i might also put a camper on the truck
i was told a 6.9 will bolt right up to a 460 c6
but i dont know if it is true?
any help would be great i gotta get theis underpowerd gas hog 400 out

The old non-turbo 6.9L might be long-lived and very economical to run, but it's because they were laughably under stressed and underpowered. Stick with the 460 unless economy is a major player in your plans.

gas millage dose play a role in my decision
mostly cause i put alot of miles on it
is it possible to get 12-13 mpg with a 460
the reason i am thinmking about the fulie heads is cause i got them and they are just rebuilt
and the exh port seems to be a good for tourq
right now the motor has d3 heads i was just gonna remove the exh bumps and run it how it is
with a cam swap
i am kinda leaning away from the diesel swap cause for what i would pay for one i could rebuild a 460 and know i have a good motor

use a 7.3 TD and get 15 all day loaded or empty.
and all the power you need
the N/A 7.3 (industrial engines are rated for 175hp cont. 190hp intermitent)
diesel all the way if its for towing.

Depends on the size of the trailer and how fast you drive.

Presuming a medium to large sized pull-behind or fifth-wheel and the runnning it at the speed limit, no. The only way you're going to get that kind of economy is with a diesel, and non-turbo diesels are pretty underwhelming in the power dept.

Why not find a well-used Powerstroke or Cummins that still has some life left? Selling the pickup you have, and considering the savings of not having to build an engine, it will probably be a wash with what a reasonably reliable high-mileage turbo-diesel would run you. Then you have the power and economy you are looking for.

agree with brad.diesel.i have a 01 dodge with cummins.my 18 ft trailer is about 2000 lbs empty.hauling a 70 torino with cruise set at 80 it got 14 mpg.plus it runs high 13 sec 1/4.

What mpg does your 400 get? The 460 will be close to that on the less side, neither the 460 or 6.9 will get the milage you seek, unless you do a lot of coasting downhill.

I have seen some 6.9 with Banks puffers that do a good job pulling and in the mpg dept. But, you are looking at dollars to set one up.

I would run the 400 till it failed or gets weak then trade for a later model FI 460 with OD.

A high milage diesel anything CAN be a money pit also, especially if it has not been maintained properly. Be careful!

i ran a 90 460 with 5 spd with service body full of black iron
swaped service body onto 6.9 with c6 was absolutely amazed by the reduction dollar for dollar on my fuel bills
now i am running a 7.3 turbo diesel and mileage is back up but still not as high as 460
difference that i found was when it comes to rebuilding. the diesel was quoted at $5000canadian for short block
i had a 460 with c6 on propane properly installed in an 81 bronco this truck could run on gas or propane gas for when you need that extra power propane when you want cheap and you can get 400liter tanks out of wrecking yards that is enough propane to not have to stop for miles and miles (just make sure you have a good cooling system)
and i am not sure of the availability of propane in the states
cause they wont let me in

Ive had 9 diesels ford and dodge. Top to bottom power. 7.3 stroker in 2002 Excursion w a small chip, 2000 and 99 stroker w no chip, 97 ford stroker, 91 dodge cummins, 92 ford 7.3 n/a, 83 ford 6.9 n/a. Top to bottom mileage, excursion 15- 18 mpg, 91 dodge 13-15 towed a lot with it mostly 20 foot stock trailer loaded to the gills, other 3 strokers about 14 pulled a lot w these also, 7.3 and 6.9 n/a wouldnt pull the hat off of ur head dont even consider them for it if u want to get there on time. Especially the 6.9, tried to pull the 20 footer with a couple of horses in the trailer and it was zero to 50 in about a month of sundays.

imho get an older dodge w a cummins these can be bought cheap, 89 to 92 go for a song. or put a cummins in the hauler you have, an easy swap if u can find a complete donor dodge, lots of guys around here in southern neb and northern ks are doing it and love it.

a cummins swap???
that is a good idea i have heard of a few guy's doing that but never thought about it myself
i had a 84 f350 with a 6.9 in it and i pulled my trailer and it was a dog but i kinda thought it was just wore out
on a cummis swap i am wondering how much trouble is it with the wireing?
mounts are no big deal to me cause i can make my own i am assuming if you run a manual glow plug switch than there is rilly not much else to the wireing just gotta spin it over?

i was just looking at cummis motors for sale and WOW i think i can buy a whole truck cheaper but since i have alll the stuff for a 460 swap maybe i should use that? mpg is a big role in my choice but i cant see myself affording to do a proper deisel swap on my budjet this year or anytime soon
so it dose look like a 460 will be the choice
now i just gotta figure out what to do to get the most mpg pulling a 10,000 lb load
i used my brother in laws dodge a few times this year with the hemi
and what a dog not much power and mpg was avg 9 per mile and that was takeing it easy at about 60-65 miles per hour
so i want to get better than that
i could live with 10-11 but i want to be able to do 70 and have some good toug

My suggestion for what is worth is a good rv cam honest comp ratio and small carb, my old 79 ec 4x4 got about 10 like that pulling or not. I would go with 373 ratio and 4sp or c6 about a 31 or 32 inch tire. Good luck, my suggestion for the cam would be an isky super or crower baja beast, great low end with both thats where the economy is at.

I don't think you going to see anything close to 10-11 mpg towing any real load with a 460 powered truck or any gas truck for that matter. In fact alot of HD gas trucks are lucky to see that with out a load.
