Simply the most common cylinder head part number for the 385 Ford engine; used for about 15 years.

This is from another thread I started.

I have come to get irritated with the mentality that the exhaust port is the ONLY problem or issue that need be addressed with the iron BBF heads. Sure the exhaust ports on all iron production ford heads bite but the intake side will out flow any other makes iron passenger car castings hands down ported or not. That does not however mean that there isn't a bunch of room for improvement.

To sum it up for the average home porter.

First off. Fix the exhaust and make it the best you can...

Once you have done this then it is time to move to the intake side. Yes thats right the intake side. Maximise the intake side too and forget the 70% I/E ratios you read about in magazines. I have a pair of D0VEs out there making 728 HP with a 56% I/E ratio and the right cam.

So what have we learned here??? Hmmmm....

Port BOTH the intake and Exhaust sides for best results on ANY combo.

Small valve doves with "some" exhaust port work wil not support 600 HP or better.

Properly ported Large valve heads with good low lift flow DO NOT cost you low end torque.

200 cfm exhaust ports will support 728 HP

D0VE & D3 (For you paul kane) passenger car heads WILL make more HP than the AFR formula says they have a right to based on their flow rates.

Scott now steps down off of soapbox and takes a hit off of his fake ciggarette cause he stopped smoking three weeks ago and is relearning how to work and play well with others...

YES ... you START improving the exhaust side however, after you get through with the biggest single improvements; (not fully porting the exhaust ports at this time), it is much more productive to also attack the intake side at that point.

Soap box & fake ciggarette, is the cig like the one that Jerry has on Boston Legal .
I can picture you chewing on that cig & just a grinding away in a port. How many you chewed up so far.

About porting both sides, after no more than I did to the exhaust on my E6 heads, which I would guess is no where near how you guys do them & with the higher lift cam, good as the engines running now if I do anymore, I'll be worring about the flexplate, C6, driveshaft & rear end holding up.

Neil,

I bought an "E" cigarette. No tobacco, no fire, no smell etc.
Gives me a shot of nicotine when I have to have it but none of the other 4000+ nasty chemicals that come with smoking let alone the nasty smell... Safe, cheaper than smokes and I can breath again!!!
