The Full size LTD's are a little bigger. If you can fit them on a LTD II then I'd guess they should fit on the LTD. Thanks!

Andy, I'm working through figuring out what I want for exhaust on my Thunderbird. Do you think that something like a Hedman 89340/89510 or Flowtech 12560 for 460-powered trucks would be worth investigating? I'm just trying to see if there's a cheaper solution that takes less custom work to fit for a Mark IV/V/72-76 Tbird application.

I truely am not the best guy to ask....but I have spent a long time looking. I would have to say from my limited experience that there is no "cheap" source for headers in this body style. There might be a set of shorty headers out there that might work....but I don't know for sure. The driverside fitment is the problem. The 6126's fit perfectly around the steering gear.
The other headers that fit, are just as expensive as the 6126's. I wish Hooker would produce them in the cheaper Competition line, but they don't.

As far as custom work.... Yeah, its a pain. Cutting back the collectors isn't that big of a deal, any exhaust shop can do that for you. Afterwards you just have to bolt them on and see where things fit. It sucks! But that's the price you pay for playing with a bodystyle with no aftermarket support.
One thing I could have looked into further is if 2.5" outlet truck manifolds would work. Its not much better than stock, but if you could get them cheap, it would be better than nothing.
Also, I believe the Cobra Jet manifolds should work, but they aren't cheap. But they should be less work to fit.

I have driven the car just a little since the header swap. There is a noticable difference. But I can't say that it is a night and day difference. This is where if I had built the motor better, the difference would be greater. If you're going to halfass your motor build like I did, manifolds might not be such a big deal. If you truely are going to do everything the right way, don't skimp on the exhaust.

Andy, what is clearance like in the area I've circled below? I'm curious about the Hedman 89140, 89280 and 89340, Hooker 6911 and Flowtech 12560. They are shorter and drop lower (no crossmember issues?) but the primaries drop a good few inches ahead of the 6126s. I'm worried about clearance with the drag link and crossmember braces. The 89510 shorty headers would be perfect if they weren't for the fuelie heads. If anyone can weigh in with their opinions on fitment that would be great.

Wow, great post of the different header designs!
I think the biggest problems are in two areas. Like you said, with the way the steering gear is placed, having the pipes drop straight down will likely cause interference.
The second, is the steering box. Take a look at the pic of the 6126's. On the driverside the third pipe back makes a big loop. The steering box fits in the hole that loop makes.
I'm afraid both of those things would be a show stopper for the other headers.

Plus, the way the pipes drop straight down will make for some low hanging pipes. The 6126's tuck really tight to the floor!

I learned the hard way that even shorties aren't a cure-all.. (tried to fit 5.0 shorties on a 351W in a mid-size and the steering box was a nightmare)..

That steering box is even somewhat close to the bellhousing. You have to ask yourself, which would I rather modify, header tube(s) or the collector?

It would be great if you could research out a cheaper header solution for these cars and go through the trouble to find all the weak spots, but how much patience do you have? Scour e-bay, maybe a cheap rusted set will pop up for small $ and you can test fit with low investment and get some snaps.

I'm just happy folks are trying new things.. (there is always the Crites swap headers as well, they are somewhat cheaper than the Super Comps, but just as likely to be difficult to fit)

*** Just noticed Mad Dog Headers has a fitment for the 70?-76 Torinos with the 460 2" primary, 3.5" collector, has anyone seen these??***

Interesting find, Jim. I don't see how they can claim fitment for 1970-76 when the platform changed so much in 72. I'd be curious to try them but wouldn't want to drop 400 bucks to find out they are a tougher fit then the Hooker set. I think I'll shoot mad dog and email asking about it.

I just shot Mark an email at Mad Dog. If they are designed for the 72-75 Torino, I think I'll grab a set. Luckily he's in MI so shipping across the border into Ontario shouldn't be terrible.

EDIT: I'm also contacting Crites to see how similar their 72-79 Torino/Ranchero headers are to the Hooker 6126s. These are even cheaper at $360.

If I'm not mistaken, two tubes on the Crites headers go down in front of the crossmember and then underneath.. Not sure how low your car is, but losing 2+" of ground clearance on my car would be a little scary.

I've heard the same ground clearence issue with the Crites. That's why I never gave them much consideration. Apparently their motor mounts drop the engine lower to the ground making the situation even worse.
