1996 f-250 with a big block

Im getting a 96 f-250 with the 7.5l auto 4x4. I was wondering if anyone has figured out how to get some decent numbers out of these. I would love to see 300hp/450-500tq am i crazy or is it doable? I did see a couple chips but they all say you could get maybe 30hp. Which in my eyes isnt worth no $300.

The Banks Power Pack will get you real close to the numbers you're looking for.

These numbers from Banks are taken at the rear wheels. Where as Ford's numbers are taken from the flywheel. Aprox. 20% difference.

I did see there kit but it doesnt seem right. Its basically a set of headers, a muffler, and a fancy air filter. They dont do anything with the ecm, just seems like everything ive been told about fuel injection tells me that a guy wouldnt hardly see any power gains without a chip or tuner. What are your thoughts on this?

I can tell you from experience that the Power Pack works. 460 exhaust ports are world famous for being poor flowing. Any thing you can do to improve the exhaust flow is the place to start. I drive a 32' motorhome built on a 1995 Ford F53 chassis w/460. Before the banks kit, the engine would roll over at 3300 RPM. It never did any thing exciting. After the install the torque is up at all RPM and it pulls real hard from about 2800 to 4000 RPM. I consistently out pull 2 Valve V10s of the same weight. MY engine/transmission combination is exactly the same as yours, except Ford didn't need to install a cat to meet emission requirements on the heaver chassis.

Without going into the engine, A set of Hooker "Super Competition" headers with a good exhaust system after the re-installed cats is a real good place to start.
A good FRESH air induction system will do wonders with that free-er flowing exhaust installed.

It's fairly quiet. I can't hear it with all the windows closed. If I want to enjoy the low rumble, I have to open the drivers window. I was headed to a camp ground in the Ozarks later one night. My buddy, already at the camp ground, said he could hear the ol 460 coming through the hills, almost 2 miles away. Then he knew is was me when he spotted the illuminated blue oval glowing on the front cap. hehe

I have a banks aftercat exhaust on my 97 f350 it isn't much, if any louder than stock. Its so quiet because of the huge catalytic converter, when i was installing it i started the truck with no exhaust behind the cat, it was pretty quiet without any exhaust. If i did it over i would just run 3" straight pipe after the cat.

If you want to do head work or put a bigger cam in you will have to do a mass air conversion. I want to do a mass air conversion on my truck but it will take a lot rewiring that makes my head spin just thinking about it. the best way to do a mass air conversion is to get a wiring harness and ecu from a 5.0 mustang, then you will have to custom tune it.
Iv'e been told that some of the mass air kits on the market are junk so beware of them.
Don't waste your money on a chip, I bought a JET chip for my truck, it didn't do anything really noticeable.
Troyer performance makes a underdrive pulley set for the EFI 460's. I have read in several places that guys have picked up 15 dyno proven horsepower with them. these will be the next thing i buy for my truck.

Just got her today and let me tell you I got a great deal. Its a white 96 f250 with 7.5l overdrive auto 4X4. It has 130,000 on the ticker and runs really good. Only paid $1500.00

I have a 95 F350 dually.I purchased a set of MAC tri-y headers and that helped some.Then I tried a chip and then a Vortex VR-2SQ-only thing they did was make me use premium fuel.Ported the heads,got an RV cam,twin 62mm TB and finally made the exhaust into true duals with an X-flow muffler and 2 resonators.Runs great but it is so LOUD that you cannot talk to someone right beside you when towing.

$1500 for a 4X4 F250 sounds good to me! You should use a set of longtube headers, and a free flowing exhaust system; then make sure that the timing chain on your engine isn't the one that is retarded 8 degrees. Get a custom tune for your engine/trans combo and you should be having a lot of fun!

Edit: If you have an automatic transmission, I cannot stress the custom tune enough. You may have to install a shift kit, or make modifications to the valve body, but the factory shift parameters are b*llsh*t! I was amazed when I got a custom tune along with a shift kit* (on a 2000 F150 5.4), it will drive like a totally different vehicle.

Not only that but it will last longer because shift kits reduce slippage.

And I agree, that is a good deal for the pickup you bought, I have no doubt you will be happy with her.

Thanks for all the replies. I think someone might have already put a shift lit in the tranny, damn thing shifts like a dragster. Where did you guys find a blank chip so that you could get a custom tune?
