Working on getting external engine stuff figured out before I send the block in for machining.
Has anyone ever modified the crank spacer? I am trying to put together an EDIS 8 ignition system to work with an EFI conversion. I propose to use a 36-1 trigger wheel from a '94 Ford V6. I have enough room between the balancer and timing cover for the trigger and sensor.
Ques. #1 Is the spacer cast iron or steel?...Need to add a ring or tabs to it for mounting the wheel.
Ques. #2 Could a new spacer with mounting ring be made from aluminum.... and survive? or just better to cut one from steel?

just so you know some one makes aluminum spacers, and lem evans has them. why not use a trigger wheel that mounts between the pulley and H balancer using the crank bolt?
I'm thinking about doing nearly the same thing. What I'm planning on doing is turning the spacer down on the fat side and creating a small lip to help centrally locate the wheel. Then when my 6" wheel gets in (sometime this week I hope,) I'll enlarge the hole in the middle of the wheel. Then I'm going to try and tig weld the trigger wheel to the spacer, but if the cast iron gives me problems when welding, I'll probably just machine one up out of steel or aluminum.
I'll let you know how it goes, I should hopefully be doing this sometime later this week.
Instead of a wasted spark edis8 setup, I'm planning on using a ls2 coil near plug setup and control it with a megasquirt. I'm still in planning phase right now, so unfortunately I can't give you any specifics.
Spacers are readily available parts. We get them from Blue Thunder in both steel and aluminum. The aluminum is teflon hard coat anodized for seal life - you'd need to clean that surface off before welding.
Thanks guys, my oem is a little buggered up. I found a couple sold under different brand names. I might just pick one up, and see what my local machinist can do about welding a mounting ring or tabs to the spacer to bolt the trigger wheel to. If he can do a ring, then I'll have it drilled and tapped with a couple of different alignments.
QUES. Where does the -1 tooth get aligned to #1 TDC, BDC?

I found a place that makes 36-1/spacer crank trigger units and Cam Synch's for the 385. www.dragonfabrication.com. Sent in an inquiry and got a response the next day from Rob (rob@dragonfabrication.com). I had materials waiting at a local machinist for over a year. But there was never any time where a bigger more $$$ job didn't move it aside.
Rob said he had the same kind of things happen when he first wanted to get parts made. His stuff looks good, better than I could have done cobbling together repurposed parts and machined parts that I drew up on a sheet of notebook paper.
