Hello All.
A little about my build-
D1VE A2B block- Boring it .030
SCJ-A heads. No work done on the heads yet. Definitely want to back cut the valves, clean up castings etc.
Figured ill run a single plane, Dominator etc.
Unsure of the Cam shaft I will run as well. Aiming for solid flat tappet to keep costs down. Want reliability and simplicity.
E85 with hopefully around 11.5:1 to 12:1 compression. Considered pump gas, but compression makes power. Setup for either option.
Cant decide on either using my stock 2y crank and finding a piston/rod combo that will work with my heads. Looking for recommendations here. So far the only shelf piston I have found is from Diamond...
or
Buying a Cast crank stroker kit. I was considering something from Coast high performance, or a site vendor. Probably a 521. Concerned about the strength of the cast crank...Don't want to spring for the forged unit. Although after balancing they might be similarly priced.
Car is an 82 Mustang GT. Setup for drag racing. 325 drag radial, spooled 4.56, Caged, Coil overs etc..C6 auto. Unsure of exact weight of vehicle. I weigh 225. Car has partial interior. 3200 lbs?
Car is setup to go into the 9's according to the Tech inspector at Milan Dragway and previous owner.
About a 60/40 split of weekend car and drag racing. Definitely not a daily driver. Stored in the garage most of the time.
I'd like to run a 10.0 to 10.2 in the quarter and have around 600-650 Horsepower.
You'll have almost as much into a 460 using quality parts as a stroker because of the higher cost of the 460 parts.
About the only way to make the 460 significantly less expensive would be to use stock rods/crank with minimal machine work. You can also cut valve reliefs in a less expensive piston to work with SCJ heads. It's all a matter of budget and how much you want to gamble with stock rods in a racing application.
I figure it will cost as much to buy some diamond pistons and scat rods and get it all balanced.... As it will to buy a cast stroker kit... Big question is .... Will the cast stroker crank survive ? ?
But seriously, I have the same heads and a similar car. I'm looking at the same kit, but I want pump gas, and I want to be able to drive it everywhere. This should get the job done, and I hear that Mark O'Neal gives discounts to drunk ********. Just saying...
Don't buy from coast high performance! I had nothing but problems with my kit. I waited for my danm kit almost 3 months! I would call them every other week asking if it would ship soon. They always had different excuses! I order a 532 stroker kit paid 200 dollors more to have it ballenced, recived the kit, took it to the machine shop it need one slug on the crank in order to balance out correctly. And to top it off they sent me 6.7 rods instead of the 6.8. I waited a month for the rods ended up getting a refund. There are several good vendors on this site that will hook you up! Excuse my crappy writing danm cell phone is getting old lol.
Well that story doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in buying from them...Hopefully the owner can explain why that occurred??
I purchased my small block parts from DSS racing and had good luck with their kits. Supposedly they are developing a big block kit for 2016... Not sure if they post here.
I'll keep my eyes peeled on here for deals from vendors.
I think 521 is about as big as I'd want to go, especially with a cast crank. If funds allow, I might spring for the forged unit and erase any doubts in my mind. At that point I would go as big as possible for cubic inches.
Hello, and thanks for the offer.
I like a couple of the builds you have done with stock stroke engines, especially the ambulance engine. Pretty remarkable for some ancient junkyard iron.
I'm a bit more cost driven with this build, so I'm still leaning towards using my stock crank(measured it and inspected- its in excellent shape) ,some decent rods, and either spring for the diamond pistons cut for the SCJ's or have a cheaper alternative notched for clearance. Unless I missed something, I figure I could have the short block together for around 1500 give or take.
The forged crank stroker really raises the overall cost of the build, but in an increased stroke situation it really is money well spent..Looks like a full forged kit is around 2700 balanced.
Not sure how easy I could sneak that one pass the wife. >
Ahh, I've built enough stuff to take the budget number and double or triple it.
Honestly, I hadn't really thought about it too much.
The car is built, I have the transmission built and waiting. Fuel system is all set... So I dont need to worry about those costs.
I'm more focused on the durability of the combination per dollar invested. A stock crank 466 with quality rods and pistons I feel will be money better spent than a lower buck stroker kit with OK parts. Ford engineered those crankshafts pretty dam well from the factory, and their reliability seems unquestioned on this site.
Of course a full forged fire breathing 557 stroker would be sweet, but I'm not sure I would do that with a stock block...might want to save that for an A460 block or eliminator etc.
Big dollar stuff is more in the future for me...still paying those school bills off:nerd:
Kids I have found are also not cheap..
Also there is a short block on the other site, Dave Freelander is selling...........521ci..scat cast crank, probe pistons, scat rods etc........ideal for what you want.......he is asking $3k. Bargain IMO
Sounds real similar to my build...as a matter of fact, you have the same exact car.
I've decided to stay with the stock crank for now...I'm just cutting new valve reliefs in my pistons to work with the SCJ head. Randy Malik got my business on the custom cam grind. I'm going to have my E85 carb built by Mark Sullens. I already have a built C4 trans filled with parts from broader performance...rear is a 9" with 3.50 gears.
what are you doing for Rods/pistons?
I'm not too far from where randy's shop is and have considered him for some work...once I get moving again.
I'm going the C6 route. It's had some work done to it, but we will see if it survives.
Really need to get moving. I recently acquired some TIAL 60mm wastegates for Free .99 from work NIB. from a dead project. Considering boost maybe? OR just use those parts as a fund raiser.
