I am restoring a 1979 F 350 flatbed. The truck will be used as a tow rig and fun cruiser. Please give me your opinion on my planned build:
Factory 460 block
Scat cast 521 kit
Dove C heads ported and cleaned up with small valves.
9:1 comp
Comp cams XE 262 h
Edelbrock performer rpm air gap intake
1 7/8 headers
EFI set up
C-6 Trans
Dana 70 rear with trac lok 3:55 gears
1. How much power/torque will it make?
2. Do you think this will be a fun combo?
3. Suggestions please before I done building it.
Clean up the intake and exhaust some to smooth and take away sharp angles. No major work. What would you suggest? Would you keep the small valves or step up to the larger valves? I want this truck to be a good hauler, fun to drive and reliable.
Not really enough information:
It all depends upon what things you expect from the truck.
Good highway fuel mileage or who cares.
Regular grade gas or Premium.
Good part throttle driving manners or who cares.
Good wide Open Throttle torque and not to worry about anything else.
Mostly towing or street fun.
What kind of exhaust behind the headers is really important.
What stall speed torque converter in that C6...?
Here is what I want out of the combination:
1. Lots of fun to drive on the street and good for towing
2. 8-12 mpg
3. Reliable, it will be driven around town, used on the farm, and taken on 100 + mile trips sometimes on hot summer days.
4. Needs to run on pump gas. No race fuel. I don't care it it is 87 or 92 octane.
5. Make lots of torque and decent power (425-475 hp and 550 ftlbs).
6. Decent idle and vacuum. A bit lopy is ok, but not too crazy.
As far as the C6. I will run a converter that matches the cam. I will run headers and 3inch exhaust.
Will the combo I originally described meet these requirements assuming The motor is built well? Also what are cam recommendations?
i think your combination looks good using the stock size valves but, it can probably make good use of a little more camshaft. Sticking with what Comp has "off the shelf", I would say 34-244-4.
HYD. FLAT - 268/276@.006" - 222/226@.050" - .535"/.535" valve lift - 110 separation; installed about 104 intake.
EDIT: That camshaft is not anywhere in their regular catalog listings.
You better add a 4 row Ford Super Cooler radiator to your list if you don't already have one.
