I have a 1979 F350 4x4 with a 460 and NP435 4-speed, I used the 351/400 bellhousing with a 390 flywheel and 3-finger 390 clutch. It has worked for 2 years now. I want to buy a new Ford Performance flywheel so I can run a diaphragm clutch. My question is which part number flywheel (390 or 460) do I need to purchase?
The flywheel barely cleaned up, so I need a new one.
It was only for the 3-finger pattern.
I want to change it because the 3 finger is wider and I barely have any pedal travel.
Big the fact that you currently have a 390 wheel on there now leads me to believe that this is an early 460 (pre 79) you are working on if so this complicates getting a flywheel thru ford I'm not sure they still offer a flywheel for the internal balance 460.You may want to check to see if there is a shorter throwout bearing/retainer assembly that allows you to keep the 3 finger clutch.
