460 junkyard turbo build.

Alright im venturing out to build a "low budget" turbo 460...ive researched but i cant seem to find an answer to manifolds. hell i know on 302's you can flip a set of shorty headers around and make a cross over.. any imput on a 460? the motor is going in a 93 stang lx..I have ported dove heads, gonna have a boost friendly cam.any advice on this build would help alot!!! knewledge is worth more than anything!!

Better have boost friendly pistons as well. My flat tops work out to 11.2:1 with my D0VEs.

I have seen a 460 turbo set-up that used stock iron exhaust manifolds, instead of exiting down they were flipped over and exited up and toward the front of engine.

i've seen a lot of boosted engines use regular exhaust manifolds, since its going to a turbo, it's not you're going to have a smooth exhaust flow anyways. the stock manifolds should work, especially for a budget build. otherwise you're going to be doing a lot of cutting and welding to get everything to fit.

I have flipped 460 manifolds, and no way were they going to cover the exhaust port opening and seal up.

460 Manifolds are not "flipable".
They are reversable however. The 75 truck manifolds I have are the best I have seen so far. By putting the passenger side one on the driver's side, it will clear over the top of the oil filter.
However, when you put the driver's side manifold on the passenger side, you might hit the motor mount boss cast into the block. Ordering a 3/8 inch thick header flange to act as a spacer might be one solution.

well first off what are you looking to get out of this HP?
It is hard to give you any info on intake with out know your goals.

If this is a low $ build just make a log style header and your going to need a big turbo if you are going single the 4cylinder turbos in the junk yard are going to be way to small and choke up the big block even in a twin set up.

If you are looking for a low dollar build this is what i would do a single 88mm s480 with a Edelbrock Torker-II or some thing in that ball park. Stock crank and rods and pistons the heads i would have went with a d3 but thats ok. The tune window is going to be a lot smaller with the dove head and you are going to have run some good fuel in it keep the boost low in the ball park of 5psi and that thing will fly read the plug read the plugs and get a AF guage on it a 750 dp ms with blow thur mods and a fuel system to feed it. i have to keep a eye on this one i dont come on here to much anymore if you have any ?s just ask and ill see if i can help out.

What has a turbo that big that can be found in a junk yard? I have been thinking of the same thing for my 69. Ever think of a suck thur system?

I know space in limited in a fox body... so this won't help you, but in something with a lot of underhood room, would a set of the industrial truck center dump manifolds work?

don't mean to hijack a thread but, how big is too big on turbos, asking because i have the chance to get the twin turbos off of a 50 ton 773 cat haul truck, would they be way too big for a 429?

About the only thing i can say is you can try them. A log style header would be a cheap way to go to if that dont work.
