Holley electric choke question

Howdy all,

I rebuilt the carb on my 86 F250 plow truck, but I think the electric choke is all goofed up. It would appear that the choke is always on. Not too bad to start cold, but hot starts are iffy, and it idles high. Choke butterfly is 90% closed whe nthe engine is warm.

I want to stick a manual choke on this carb - is it as straightforward as I think? I've heard that there's a vacuum port I might need to plug, and change the idle cam to a different style?

Is in an after-market Holley or a stock one. Reason being is the after-market chokes need 12 volts to work right. The stock ones only used 6-7 volts if I remember right.

You can adjust the temperature/duration of choke operation by rotating the plastic spring housing.

It's the stock Holley.

I put the choke back on with no "preload" on the spring at first, but it didn't seem to work at all. So I rotated it 360 (as the orange sandwich plastic deal only allows teh spring housing to go on in one clock position). Maybe I either went the wrong way, or shoulda left it alone!!

So on my holley electric chokes - you put it on (make sure the arm hooks into the spring correctly) and then rotate it a little bit until the choke starts to close. There are notches / lines that you use to measure how rich/lean it is set. I would set it initially to where it just stays open when at operating temperature. The next time the engine is cold - try to start it - if it has too much choke you can back it off a little bit and try again. For me it always takes days because you only get one shot each morning unless you live so far north you need to seriously condsider relocation.

yup, usually takes a couple days of trial and error.

You know its on too long now. Back off two notches and see what ya get.

There after go only 1 notch. Your just adjusting spring tension.

cant edit here... damn. Might want to get the directions out again. I think if you put it together at 72 degrees (house temp) shouldn't have had any preload.

Make sure elect choke cap is actually heating up, you can hook it up to voltage source with it off and see if spring moves. They burn out sometimes.
