Hi guys,

Here in Australia, we've got some fancy pants rules regarding engine changes in our cars.
In particular, the engine must atleast meet the emmissions standard of the year the car was made or the year the engine was made, whichever is the newest.
So if I put an engine from a 1970 car into my 1983 Falcon, I must make it meet the same standards of 1983. Or, if I put a 2006 engine in it, it must meet the standards of 2006.

OK, I also have a limit on the capacity of the engine as a ration to the weight of the car. So a 460 will be too big. a 429 will be sweet.

So I'm wondering if they made 429s with a carby up to 1983. I will modify the engine when I'm done, but in order to be approved by an engineer to have a big block in my ride, I need to start with a base engine.

Can anybody help me with some info, please?

G'day Chaise

The engineer i was dealing with didn't say anything about capacity to weight ratio. He had no problem with a 460 in my XD ute. I told him i had a 74 motor and he said that would be the equivalent to our standard for the 79 emissions i need. Otherwise i could run it on lpg and have no worries. That was his view anyway but other engineers might have different interpretations.

Chaise, what state are you in? In NSW, the code of practice has changed and bigger N/A engines are allowed. In answer to your other question, all you need to do is keep the emissions equipment your XE had originally; namely EGR closed PCV and closed evaporative emissions eqiupment i.e. Carbon Cannister and a stock style non venting fuel tank cap.

The engineer you consult for your engine conversion will be able to provide you with your requirements.

The guy i had has since retired so i have to find another engineer to pass mine.

I have done like Stephen said and kept all the emissions equipment that was on my ute.
