building a mild 500hp 460 for my 4x4 f150 1977truck. Itll be a summer daily driver (60 miles a day) and ill be attempting to scare women and children with the occasional outburst of immature behavior, and taking it to the strip a couple times yearly.
Looking for answers to the following:
Headers: currently have a 351m with manifolds and dual exhaust. Looking for a header that will allow me to use most of what I already have- I can Cerakote my own headers, inside and out, so material doesnt matter as much to me. Thoughts?
torque converter? thinking about 2000 stall, but i WILL be using this rig to tow my camper and farm tractor a couple times each yearly... So.....
engine mounts?
Before anyone flips out and says "google it and do your research", please understand that I have already done that. Ive also been stalking this and other forums for months, but I can only afford to do this once, so Im just reaching out for input because this forum has by far, been the most useful Ive ever joined...
Trident since ford never offered the 460 in that body style 4x4, mounts are going to be conversion mounts like L&L or possibly some factory mount for another app. I've seen 460's swapped into earlier FE trucks with I believe 390GT fairlane block mounts with slotted holes but 351M is a different story,it would be trial and error unless you bit the bullet & bought the conversion mounts, which ever way you go headers will be a guess too unless you went with L&L headers with their mounts.Depending on your skills you could fab mounts but you would want to get your headers and fab your mounts around them.
you can also use stock fe horns, and 390 or any other fe mount,bu turing it around, and switching sides, it gives you just 2 holes to use, fits fine, have done more then a few of these
/\ also works in early galaxie 65 66 for a 429 install
There you go FE frame perches should be easy to find they used the same ones as six cylinder trucks, the small block,351M/400 used different perches, you may need to drill some extra holes for the perches, some trucks had both sets but not all.Years ago when I swapped a 65 f100 from six to smallblock some of the bolt holes were there but not all.If you do have to drill some holes in the frame rails or crossmember make sure have a good drill bit their like drilling a hole in a hammer.
member of a dozen forums that involve reloading, competitive shooting, rock crawling etc.... nowhere is there this much legitimate information in one place, by people who arent just keyboard jockeys. Thank you for the replies.
Im going to look into the header thing more.... Ive got a cnc machine, so if I needed to make a shim or some adapter for motor mounts, im much more comfortable doing that, than custom headers.
Ill be trying some of the tricks for motor mounts. thanks
Headers wise, I bet money that the outlet area of a standard set of shorty 460 headers is pretty near where my exhaust will pick up... my 351m is bolted to a c6- since the bellhousing is the same size, and other looking around ive done, it looks fairly similar. Im guessing a couple of custom bent pipes for exhaust will adapt quite well for about 100$
thanks, yes the 400 351m trans is the same, converter, and flywheel will not work
either find 460 truck manifolds,or headers, 429 thunder jet,or any car manifold will req you to trim on the top of the r/h frame rail to get a lead pipe to the manifold, the truck ones cruve in away from frame so notch is not needed, youll need a rear sump pan for 4x4,ive done it with the front, but its too close to stuff,
You guys mind making any suggestions for cams?
Looking for a reliable street able cam that will support my 5000lb truck.
The build is a:
87 bottom end, and block. Freshened up and deck cleaned up.
D0ve heads, heavily ported, and cleaned up all around.
Edelbrock intake
Headers, dual pipes with H
750cfm carb
Looking for a cam that will support towing, a trip or two to the strip annually and daily driving in the summers, and again- scaring women and children
on the header thing- i knew what you meant, i was just sloppy with my terminology. thanks though, because there was a time when i didnt know that either.
Im ordering a set of headers this week, and the only other thing to finish up is a cam.
Does anyone have a print of the engine? Im thinking about doing my own billet oil pan.
