'78 Bronco Build

Hi guys, I picked this one up from a friend about 2 years ago. '78 Bronco custom that we dropped a 460 in about 20 years ago. He finally decided to part with it after 16 years in storage.
A friend and I spent about 7 months last year fixing a couple "trouble" spots on the body and smoothing the glass top before a fresh coat of single stage gloss balck paint. We also did a black chrome treatment on all of the molding trim, grille shell, mirrors, and badges.

Time for phase 2.
I cracked the flexplate twisting it a little higher than I should have, so the motor had to come out anyway....

Soooooo..... the D9 block is getting bored .040, zero-decked, 4.3 Scat crank, H-beams, Probe forged dish pistons (should shake out to 10.2:1) oiling mods, max effort D0ve heads, L&L nickel fenderwell headers, Comp Extreme 4x4 solid hydrolic flat tappet cam, and a RPM intake with a 750DP just to get it running. I'll be jumping up to an 850 or 950 once it's broken-in.
I also just picked up a NOS 125 shot kit just for messing around. I'm hoping for 600 HP before the bottle, but the dyno will tell all.

I think that i would obtain a better flexplate to match the new engine

1967 Mustang coupe, Mustang II front suspension. W/RV camed, D3VE headed, 460/C6 (soon to be 557 CID w/ported police interceptor heads) out of the box BBC headers(with homemade steel adapters)

Shocktower removal enthusiast.

Tim its looking great, you have no idea how wound up my dad is after getting those heads saturday too, I'm just glad I didn't have to drive him home afterward, lol.

^^^ Thanks! The block is at the machine shop right now and should be done this coming week, so we can finally mock up the rotating assy. and check clearences. I'm hoping to have that done and get the rotating assembly back in for ballancing by next weekend. Then I get to wait again..
This weekend is the nodular center section upgrade for the 9" and fluid changes for everything behind the motor.
If that goes well I'll start bending up steel for the cage.

Well, I just realized that I never updated this thread because I have another one going on a different site.
I ended up going with a 523 with 10.3:1 C/R and a decent flat tappet cam.

Long story short, the 1st time I got it in the sand last season, I puked the tranny. I really didn't think it would hold up very long with the new power plant. That took a couple months to get fixed up and I got it back in the sand the end of Sept.

After cruising around for a couple hours and climbing a few hills,I started smelling coolant. Crap! back to the trailer. We got it home and found a bad head gasket. I thought it would be wise to pull a few lifters and just make sure that things were still OK. I'm glad we did! 1 bad lifter and some serious wear on the cam. Comp was nice enough to credit me for the cam, lifters, and nitrating so it was time to step it up again.

Now it's full roller with approximately .700 lift with the new rockers. A ported victor tops it off with a 1000 cfm Pro Systems 4150. I have a 1050 Dommy to send into Pro Systems mid season for the next upgrade.

Tranny has also been seriously beefed up with the regular recipe for holding 700+hp.

Currently the only item I'm waiting on before throwing the tins on is a girdle set for the heads- and I hope to have that by the next weekend.

Since this is a show piece as well as a runner, I decided to forgo the Ford blue with International red to match the trim and suspension. That way it will also match all of the MSD components too. The lighting was a little weird with the light coming in through the window, so it does look orange in the pics. Trust me- it's bright red.



So with any luck, we'll be dropping it back in next weekend and firing it up the following. I still have to finish up the new instrument cluster so that I have accurate gauges before the break-in, but that's almost done as well.

It's been a long winter! Finally on Memorial Day weekend I got to take it out for the 1st fully successful test drive. Trans is nice and solid, motor sounds good, spark plugs looked great, new bumpers are built, painted, and installed, new seats are in, and it's even dusted off.

Here's a little walk-around while it's running.

Very nice. Love the throttle response. The passenger side front spring looks odd, is that just a camera thing?

I had a '78 with a 460 never looked as good as yours though.

Thanks. I'm running Deaver soft-ride coils and they always bow out. I've never seen a set that didn't. They may look weird, but they ride like a dream!
