Steel Gas Tank Plumbing

I just dropped some serious coin on a brand new steel tank in the Bronco last season. I'm converting over to an electric fuel pump set up for the new motor.
I really don't want the hassle of installing a fuel cell- at least this year.
Has anyone ever drilled the back lower edge of one of those tanks and installed some bulkhead fittings to connect the fuel lines to? I see guys doing it all the time on the plastic tanks in the newer Camaros and Vettes when they set them up for drag use.

Are there any downsides to doing it this way?

I will be notching the heavy steel gaurd/mount and welding a gaurd to protect the fittings as well.

Any experience would be greatly appreciated!

You could probably do that. I put a sump on mine but what you are talking about would probably work just fine. I ran my return line in the top where the stock setup flowed out from.

Yes, I thought about that as well, but then I would need to weld in a larger diameter tube in the sending unit. I think I'm going to use the top section of the stock pickup tube for the vent. Just cut it off underneath and hook up a tube and check ball vent.
