dfree383 08-13-2006, 02:53 PM Finaly made a few passes with my 84 Mustang GT this weekend.
Best Pass 10.53 @ 131.2 mph with a 1.59 60' time. at NYIRP, Also did a couple of passes at ESTA and Spencer. Did a couple of side ways passes !! Yikes !!
I Have some pretty bad traction issues, couldn't leave off of the trans brake !! car skates the tires even leaving on the foot brake from almost idle and breaks the free when I hit high gear. I'm only running 28 X 11.5 MT ET Streets, Any Suggestions.........
Still have stock struts and am going to replace them with Strange 10 ways and I'm going to adjust the rear suspension, any Suggestions for a pinion angle?
Combo is a .030 over D1 Block, Domed TRW's, 1970 SCJ Heads (ported) Comp Cams Solid Flat Tappet, 1050 on a Ford Single Plane, 2 1/8" D&D's, JW Glide w/4500 and a 9" with 3.89's.
Thanks
Dave
Devildog 08-13-2006, 05:53 PM Hell yeah baby! Cant wait to get mine runnin......maybe try a -2 to start.....hails D
PatFromJersey 08-13-2006, 08:09 PM Congrats Dave. 8) Sounds like a strong runner.
Brenden 08-14-2006, 09:35 AM Dave I'm not sure on your wheel set up but I would run at least a 10" wheel with those tire and around 12 to15 LBS in them. What is the rest of your suspension?
dfree383 08-14-2006, 10:29 AM Front QA1 Tubular Front w/ coil overs (200# springs) Still have stock struts. (getting a set of Strange 10 ways this week)
Rear JDI Adjustable Uppers and Lowers, 50/50 drag shocks and coil overs (135# Springs), Reinforced Torque boxes and everything is welded up.
Pinion Angle is same as stock. (measured the stock arms and set them to that to start)
9" Strange Rear End.
15x9 Welds with 5.5 back spacing and 28x11.5 MT ET Streets.
I'm guessing this is more than a suspension set-up issue as the car is breaking the tires free again after it settles down and I shift into high gear. Any suggestiong on tires to run? Compounds? I'm limited to something in the 28x10 range due to clearance right now.
Brenden 08-14-2006, 11:02 AM Dave it sounds like your on the right track. I would suggest the 28*10.5 tires on a 10" wheel or wider if possible. Your tires can be made to work as well but I you will need a 10" wheel.
The strange struts will make a big change. I would use a 175 lbs. spring to help weight transfer a little more.
Tire wise I like the M/T's. I run the 28*12.5 ET Street same as a 28*10.5 slick and they work pretty good.
dfree383 08-14-2006, 11:25 AM I agree I need to get some more tire under the car !! Going to try the struts and different pinion angle this weekend and go from their.
What are you running your pinion angle at? You have stock type rear suspension?
ShadowMaster 08-14-2006, 11:31 AM Pinion angle: -3 degrees with "stock style" rear suspension.
Phantasea466 08-14-2006, 11:34 AM Nice Job Dave!
How is the track prepped? Could be a combination of suspension and track preperation if you are loosing traction on top as well..........
Brenden 08-14-2006, 11:40 AM Dave with the polyurethane bushings I was at 5 degrees. However I now have TeamZ stuff that uses Heim Joints/rod ends and run 3 degrees. I tried as little as 1 degree but didn't find any change/improvement.
I sure you already have removed it but if you haven't take the front sway bar off.
dfree383 08-14-2006, 12:34 PM Sway bar is History.
NYIRP and ESTA where Both Test and Tunes, so the track was probably a little green didn't have a large volumn of big cars laying down the rubber, so that could have some effect. Spencer is just a little 10th mile track by my house and the prep isn't every good their and I didn't expect any good times.
I'm thinking after the struts and adjusting the pinion. I might try some ballast, maybe 75-100# extra in the back and see how it responds.
Yes, loosing it when I hit high gear too. The cars leaves OK on the concrete then hits the pavement and starts hazing the tires, starts to hook when the RPM gets up, and then breaks free again when I hit high gear.
dfree383 08-16-2006, 12:38 PM Just ordered the Strange 10 ways, What settings would you start with?
ShadowMaster 08-16-2006, 12:50 PM Three clicks from dead soft.
dfree383 08-28-2006, 07:32 AM Update !!
Ran Friday Night T & T at NYIRP
Best Run 10.29 @ 132.5
Couldn't install the Strange Struts, Mounting Point on the Spindles is way to wide. So I decided to run with just the addition of welds and some MT Fronts and picked up .25 a 1.5 mph !!
Dan Tyner Spanked me in a run we did !! He holeshoted me bad !!! But it was fun !!
dfree383 09-06-2006, 03:37 PM Update !!
Car is running better !! No changes made but 60' times are in the 1.48 range now and the car is pulling the weels about 6-8". I'm guessing the rear tires have finally broke in??
Any how It consistanly running 6.51-6.52 @ 106 mph in the 1/8 mile. Should be in the 10 teens !!
I don't think I'm going to install the strange struts if it keep running this good !!
dfree383 09-17-2006, 10:23 AM Another update, 10.22 @ 132.8 no changes made.........
Brenden 09-18-2006, 10:56 AM Dave, sounds like the car is working great. Keep us posted on the struts and how they work for you.
dfree383 09-18-2006, 11:00 AM I have to find a set of spindle's to put the struts on !!! Still looking for a set of 87-93 V8 Spindles.....................
Brenden 09-18-2006, 11:30 AM Dave could you tell me the difference with the struts and why new spindles are required.
I was talking to Mike Duffy about this situation last week and he couldn't remember what he did but he was able to use the stock spindles and either shim the strut with a piece of steel or aluminum or he machined the spindle down some. He just couldn't remember which. Thanks.
Mark Miller 09-18-2006, 10:46 PM 1989 Mustang. My car came with a 4 cylinder in it,i went to put some Koni Struts on it i bought off of my friends 1988 5.0 and they wouldn't fit.The part on the 87-93 4 cylinder spindle and 79-86 5.0 spindle are wider where the strut bolts up than the 87-93 5.0 spindle is.Luckily i bought the 87-93 5.0 brake set up a while back and put the bigger rotor set up on.I also found out the brackets where the rubber brake lines hook up from the caliper are different from the 4 cylinder and the 5.0 cars.Luckily my friend had the extra brackets i needed. If you can't find the 87-93 5.0 brake set up let me know my friend has it.
Later Mark.
dfree383 09-20-2006, 08:58 AM The Spindles on my 84 gt are too fat where the struts bolt on (2 big bolts). I believe the lakewoods come wider and require shims to fit the later struts? The strange struts come with the narrow and can't be spread enough to fit the spindles on my gt (probably about 1/4" to narrow).
Brenden 09-20-2006, 09:34 AM Dave thanks, MDRC must have just ground down the extra metal off of the spindle.

I'm just looking for the spindles, I'm going to upgrade to Strange Brakes.
