If your engine is on the verge of being too hot, then so is the oil. Not a good thing. An oil cooler won't likely help cool the engine much, but it will help keep the oil from exceeding it's proper operating temperature. Synthetic oils will take a few more degrees than dino oil before breaking down, but why push it? Bottomline: I'd suggest you look for one that you like, can afford, will fit into your engine compartment, etc. and put it in... StickBBF :) torinotroy 09-24-2006, 12:17 PM cool, the engine isnt in yet. i'm just taking every precaution i can. i figure spend a few extra hundred dollars to save a few thousand. :D i'm also planning to add a tranny cooler to be on the safe side :D i have an aftermarket aluminum radiator also. no oil yet. would you suggest a synthetic oil? my 460 is bored 60 over, and i've been told it may run hot because the walls are thinner now. :? whadya think? thanks very much for the reply! have an awesome day, torinotroy p.s. ive bypassed the heatert core and am running the hose from the edelbrock intake to the edelbrock water pump. would this affect the cooling? It's your call. However, I would suggest that you break-in the engine on dino oil (I'd go with whatever your machine shop dude recommends) then change it & the filter after the 1ST HOUR of run time, then again after 10hrs of run time. After that, you could switch to synthetic or not at your regular oil change intervals...... 2 :?: It will run a tad warmer, but not because of the thinner walls, rather because it'll likely be making more power!  The aluminum radiator was an excellent upgrade move - Good Job! 3 :?: Bypassing the heater core should not pose any ill effect on the cooling system performance. However, I would recommend you install a hi-flow thermostat; like this one: http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?lang=-1&catalogId=10002&storeId=10001&categoryId=13447&searchItemId=14121 and make sure you install the short bypass hose. Good Luck! StickBBF :) PJS50 09-28-2006, 03:55 PM I run an oil cooler in my Cobra all the time and I doesn't seem to "over-cool" the oil unless it's pretty chilly outside (50F or less)... You don't need one at all if your oil temp stays in a reasonable range.. If you do need one, get a nice Setrab one and run a minimum of AN12 lines to it and back.. CV products has a good selection of them at very competitive prices.. http://www.cvproducts.com/cv/default.aspx On the synthethic oils, I too recommend that you don't get into them until a good 1000 miles of street driving/break-in... Then it would be OK to go to synthetics.. One other thing... If you have a "leaky" engine, synthetic oil will give you a REALLY leaky engine... | |
