ZF-5SPEED TRANNY FLUID

I was just wondering what fluid would be the best to run in my tranny for truck pullin and every day driving. I was told that some synthetics don't stick to the surfaces well enough for shifting?

Would AMS OIL MTF WORK?

My truck is a 96 F350 460efi

Yep, that should work fine. I know a lot of people like the Redline MTF. Just don't use any special additive, especially not the Lucas climbing oil additive.

thanks for the info, I was hesitant to put it in there. AFT is what I would normally put in there, like valvoline or something. I have put synthetic ATF in there before and had problems shifting. I don't know all the quarks of the ZF trannys

anybody else run synthetic in their zf-5speed. Any more info concerning the syncro pads staying lubricated with synethic would be appreciated.

The possible issue with synthetic oil and syncros is not that the oil doesn't stick to the friction surface, but that it sticks too well and doesn't allow the syncro to grab as it's supposed to. The oil needs to be made for high pressures which occur in the gear teeth of manual transmissions or differentials but also allow the syncros to grab enough that you can shift smoothly from one gear to the next. If a good fluid designed for manual transmissions doesn't get you decent shifting (assuming your clutch is fully releasing the the input bearing isn't seized up) then it's time to consider a rebuild of the trans with new syncros.
