Phantasea466 09-20-2007, 11:29 AM I'm going to get some adjustable front drag struts for my car in the near future to replace the 90/10 lakewood drag struts that are on the car now. Any suggestions?

What works best for you guys?
Nitro Lew 09-20-2007, 11:38 AM I have used both QA-1's and Strange and both worked great !

Phantasea466 09-20-2007, 11:41 AM I was looking at the QA1 website. Single and Adjustable drag struts. Wonder what the doubles cost?
twice as much..........
With the hook you got now, why the hell ya going to change it???

Winter upgrades. I noticed that the QA1's are adjustable from the top and not double adjustable. $250 at Jegs, didn't see them on the Summit web site.
Anyway, would like some tunability at the front and maybe it won't hit the wheelie bars so hard. Would also like to upgrade the front brakes over the winter, kind of planning ahead.
If I could afford it Damon I would go with Santhuff. They make a direct bolt on strut for your car. They are kind of pricey though. I ran QA1 single adjustable for years with no problems except for people wanting to turn the adjustment knob everytime they got around the car. You can take the knob off though.
jmayabb 09-20-2007, 02:02 PM That was me in the above post Damon. Forgot to log in.
Nitro Lew 09-20-2007, 02:07 PM It sayd $229 in the summit book

Phantasea466 09-20-2007, 02:15 PM thanks Guest...... I mean Joe
I'll do a search and see what I can find. Price would be the kicker, I'm still on a budget :D Joe, are you going to BG for the NMRA event? You can hang out with all of us
Lew,
I didn't see them at Summit.com? Are they part # H2001?
Thanks guys......

Can understand, but if your goal is to limit front suspension travel, just put travel limiters on it. A length of chain works great, you can "pull out" as much spring lift as you want by shortening up the chain length.
The limitations of the QA1 and or other adjustable struts/shocks, is you wont have the initial unload, the "valve" adjustment will set against the entire range of travel, where you might actually like that 90% free flow for the first 4" of lift, and then go to a 10% valve flow to start picking up the wheels.
Now some of the "buildable" shocks have a multi-stack valveing where the rate of movement will cause a variable load on the shock/strut. THe launch is an instant movement.... not a cyclic rate like for a track car or off-road vehicle. You end up in compromise either way, with an adjustable strut/shock, you slow the extension speed down with shock resistance, and you come to a happy half way on getting enough lift to transfere weight, but picking up the front suspension early enough to limit the continued lift. BUT you can have full strut extension for the set down.
With a limiter strap, you pick the wheels up when you want, but your also limited on the suspension extension to absorb the set down.......
Phantasea466 09-20-2007, 02:45 PM Good point on the limiters. And it's a LOT cheaper
I've also been having trouble with slow posting :P

Yes that is the part number . I sold mine back when I had the modular motor in the car and now have the Strange adjustable struts up front . The reason I want with the strange this time is because they are half the price of the QA-1's .
dfree383 09-20-2007, 02:55 PM Damon,
I just put Strange Adjustables and Strange Brakes on the front of mine. Bothe went on flawlessly.
Don't forget you may need the 1987 and up V8 spindles if you don't already have them

I don't have the 87 an up spindles. All stock 79 stuff up front :?
me too.. 4 lug wonders... (less unsprung weight) the 87 and up spindles weigh more.
dfree383 09-20-2007, 04:49 PM Alot of the aftermarket adjustable shocks will only work with the "thinner" 87 and up V8 spindles.............. The 1986 and before and 4 cylinder spindles have thicker mounting points for the struts.
Just trying to save you some aggrivation, when you go to put everything together.
and as far as the weight goes it a very small differance...........if any.
gtmustang 09-20-2007, 05:31 PM I have a set of HAL (now QA1) adjustable struts since they came out. I've always been disappointed in the weight transfer I get from them. Even with 175# coilover springs, I'm not getting the instataneous front lift I need to improve the traction on my BB '92 mustang. I probably need to add some ballast to the rear, and I might try 160# springs. I've even considered a set of old fashioned 90/10 struts. The aluminum bodied QA1's are so pretty, I'd hate to get rid of them.

Brenden 09-27-2007, 02:00 PM Mike Duffy suggested Strange one's for my car and the Santuff's if I wanted to spend a bunch for the "best". He hates the QA1 stuff and says they wear out way too fast and the valving is inconsistant.
I run the earlier GT spindles that are thicker. He said to just machine them down the 1/8 to use the Strange 87 and up struts. However for now I'm keeping the Lakewood 90/10's I'm running. He said they have to best free travel until I start to have wheelie problems.
richter69 09-27-2007, 02:35 PM We bought a set from Mike, the Strange ones. They work great for the coin, but start to go away after 100 passes or so. Not the best option for a bracket car, but bang for the buck they are a rockin deal.
