ONEBAD555NOTCH 09-26-2007, 09:31 PM I JUST BOUGHT A POWERMASTER 140 AMP - I WAS THINKING OF TRYING TO COME UP WITH A WAY TO MOUNT IT IN THE REAR.
I REMEMBER YEARS AGO CHUCK FEST DID IT AND I CANT FOR THE LIFE OF ME REMEMBER HOW
MY ALT I BOUGHT HAS A 70 AMP 800 RPM CHARGE AND AT 3000 IT COME IN FULL CHARGE @ 140 AMPS
ANY IDEAS HERE GUYS WOULD GREATLY BE APPRICATED AND PICS AS WELL
THANKS GERRY
Gearhead559 09-26-2007, 10:18 PM didnt he mount it off the drive shaft yoke ? made brackets to the rear housing...
D.I.L.L.I.G.A.S. 09-27-2007, 05:07 AM Pat Musi's Willie Rells built pro street camaro had a similar alternator setup. The pinion yoke did have a pulley to it. the alt was either mounted to one side of, or above, the center section.

jones 09-27-2007, 07:27 AM This is how majority of dirt track cars mount their alt. I'm sure you could find everything you need in a dirt track parts supply house.
Only thing bad about it is the driveshaft has to be turning in order to turn the alt.
ONEBAD555NOTCH 09-27-2007, 07:32 AM i understand all that- im running to dry cell batteries and take a car charger to the track when i go-
i just want to do something different...
460stang79 09-27-2007, 07:36 PM here is one mounted on a 9in ford rear.

KAILUAZ 01-31-2009, 04:03 PM I'm grave digging here I know, but thats pretty neat, until you have to change the belt.
1Bad65 01-31-2009, 04:22 PM Why would anyone want to do this? Is there a benefit from it?
richter69 01-31-2009, 05:18 PM If your not driving it on the street toss the alternator, its extra weight and gets in the damn way.
Thats why we have 16 volts, battery chargers and generators.

thats a big X2 to that... :D
Doug Rahn 01-31-2009, 07:51 PM Gerry, you must be bored and needing something to do.
richter69 01-31-2009, 08:10 PM forgot to look at the date..................someone went digging into the archives...........
56tbird 01-31-2009, 08:17 PM I'm putting my altenator back on my mustang one of these days. I really like having it .It's real good in the late rounds when they round robin you. I ain't worried about the ET with it,as long as it's consistant
richter69 01-31-2009, 08:26 PM put a 16 volt in it Dan-o, only downside is the cost of it and the charger.
Its kinda like alky, one you go that route you never go back.............

haha, yeah I was searching for alternator mounting options. I don't think I'll use that one though. :D
1Bad65 01-31-2009, 11:08 PM lol...I didn't realize the date either
maverick405 02-02-2009, 08:10 AM if it only needs 3k rpm use the eletric water pump drive kits from summit, and figure a mount for it.
biddy84 02-03-2009, 09:22 PM Obviously this is only good for road cars.
When the cars not moving the alt a'int working.
But thats the obvious flaw.
That setup is for road racing.
Too much road grim and rocks and whatever for daily driving use.

Thats a great idea
I think that'll be sweet to mount the alternator in the box of the truck and drive the alternator with an electric drive kit.
My question is, does anyone know how fast the Moroso electric drive motors spin?
I have the smallest MSD pulley you can get on my alternator and can adapt a bigger pulley on the Moroso drive, will it be enough to spin the alternator fast enough and will the Moroso drive have enough grunt to keep it spinnin under load??
KAILUAZ 02-05-2009, 07:34 AM That is a good idea, I'm surprised no one here has tried it.

If i remember right the one my brother bought, and im gonna buy said it spun right at 3000 rpm.But i'll have to look.

You guys might want to google "perpetual motion" before you go using your battery to drive a motor to drive the alternator to charge the battery.
KAILUAZ 02-05-2009, 09:49 AM The term perpetual motion, taken literally, refers to movement that goes on forever. However, the term more generally refers to any closed system that produces more energy than it consumes. Such a device or system would be in violation of the law of conservation of energy, which states that energy can never be created or destroyed. The most conventional type of perpetual motion machine is a mechanical system which (supposedly) sustains motion despite losing energy to friction and air resistance, or while avoiding losing energy to friction and air resistance. According to the law of conservation of energy, such a device cannot exist.
Eh, sounded like a good idea!
richter69 02-05-2009, 11:58 AM I doubt that little motor would spin the alt fast enough without any load, you would be surprised how much it takes to spin an alt when its actually loaded...................
Seems Smokey Yunick had a gernerator driven by a propeller mounted in the grill of one of his roundy round cars, I think the weight of it offset any good it was worth..........that it was that effective lol.
D.I.L.L.I.G.A.S. 02-05-2009, 05:22 PM Out of curiosity years ago I clamped an alternator in the drill press, & spun it while hooked up to a battery. It was surprising to see how much of a load the alternator put on the drill press when it was cranking out a full charge to the battery.

I have done this and it will work to a point. I used the moroso electric water pump drive pulleys on the alt. and the motor. I used a 140amp alt. from a semi. Ran it for 2 yrs. and never had to recharge the batterys, only reason I took it off was we had an alt. go out on a truck and needed it. The only problem I had was if you run it for about 20-30 min. straight it would blow the 20amp fuse to the motor. I only run it when the truck was running. I have an electric fan, water pump, fuel pump, msd box, tach, and a few gauge lights.
