psquare75 09-30-2007, 10:49 AM So I'm getting no where and frustrated on another forum, so I figured I'd ask the people who know what's up.
My 79 F100 has 28 spline axles (found that out after pulling one). Went on the hunt for some 31 spliners at the local yard. 4x4s with dana's don't help me, I pulled one from a 78 Bronco that was alllll wet, and the nut/stud size on the axle retaining flange was larger than my trucks.
Also pulled one from a van.. idk, 75-91? Big van. It used a very odd wheel bearing setup, almost like a tapered bearing for the front spindles.. My truck uses a one piece sealed style bearing, like my Cougar does.
What else can I look in? The junkyard has some 80s trucks, I didn't go digging in those for fear of running into that bearing setup again.
I see that Jegs has axles that are listed as 74-86 F150/E150. Will those later pickups use the bearing style I need?
deerhunter3814 09-30-2007, 11:19 AM Look in 4X4 trucks (late 70's I no for sure) also if you want some new ones go to http://broncograveyard.com/index.php I deal with these people all the time, I always talk to Mark.
deerhunter3814 09-30-2007, 11:24 AM When you talk to Mark, ask him about the Yukon, they are a good axle that is guaranteed.

I checked a Bronco, and the retaining flange used much larger studs and a different bolt pattern
deerhunter3814 09-30-2007, 11:37 AM Call Mark Monday, he will know what you need.

psquare75 09-30-2007, 02:35 PM Rather than spend $400 for axles (by the time they are assembled), I can get an entire housing complete for $100, I just need to know what would interchange. :?:
psquare75 09-30-2007, 03:47 PM Some people have said a 79-86 Bronco rear axle will just up and swap into my truck with no issues and they have 31 spline rear axles... is this true?
deerhunter3814 09-30-2007, 08:08 PM Well first, the Yukon chrome molly axles are not that high, I run them in my race truck, next I would bet a 1978-1979 rear end will swap with no problem, the only issue may be the width of the leaf springs, but that is no problem, just get everything from rear end, leaf springs and shackles (hangers).
It is not a complicated swap, just some time consuming work. I have done this by my self on three different occasions on F-150 4X4 trucks, some leaf springs are 2 1/2 inches wide and like mine there are 3 inch wide.
Bob Street 09-30-2007, 08:45 PM I have several sets of axels laying the shop that i have had for years. Does yours have tapered bearings? Send me the length of your 28 spline axels and i will do some measuring.

psquare75 09-30-2007, 09:24 PM Bob, that's the problem, I have cylindrical sealed one piece bearings, same as on my Cougar and my Torinos that I had.
36 truck 09-30-2007, 10:58 PM I have a 9" axle builder near me. he buys & builds 9" axles all day long he can set you up with any kind of axles & bearings you need. Axle bearings can interchange between the different type of bearings. PM me for his phone #
psquare75 10-01-2007, 08:35 AM David, just spoke with Mark, he said he can most likely bail me out. I'll measure the shaft, bearing diameter and retaining flange spacing when I get home.
I'll let you all collectively know how this works out.
:)
More $$ I didn't want to spend.

psquare75 10-01-2007, 02:38 PM I'm most likely going to need the larger style wheel seal when I change axles aren't I?
"The books" show two different kinds for the outer sealed bearing

The first is for the 3300# axle.. the second for the 3600/3750# axle.
31 spline axles have a larger diameter at the 'sealing point' don't they?
(No books or how-to FAQs seem to mention this issue).
79bronco 10-01-2007, 03:06 PM Ive got axle shafts with both styles...Im currently using the set that has the smaller seal...and the set im talking to you about is the set with the larger ones...
psquare75 10-01-2007, 05:15 PM Sent you axle specs 79bronco
