What PG flexplate?

I don't need expensive SFI, just a flexplate for the swap, has a JW bell on it. Looking for cheap-cheap-cheap (if that's possible) can a factory one be drilled? What else do I need, I see converter adapters for sale too...

Is the Scat one any good, it is cheap enough.

You say you have an Ultra Bell, so I would guess you are talking about putting a powerglide trans in. Correct?

If so, I would put in a JW Wheel and nothing else. I think that if you use another brand or a redrilled oem flexplate you will run into spacing issues with the converter being too far or too close to the trans. On these adapter deals you really need to stick with the entire package from one mfg to make sure everything matches correctly. In your case The JW Bell, flexplate and converter adapter are all meant to go together. I use an ATI adapter, so I will stick with the entire ATI package.

I'm not saying it won't work to mix/match, but it will be a hassle. Been there, done that, learned not to do it again.

I'm with Dave, the JW stuff is really nice and intended to work with the swap, I've been running one for two seasons now and no problems.

Thanks for the info, I was just worried about the JW one, I heard a while back they were having trouble with them cracking. Plus, I was just trying to be as cheap as possible. Guess I'll just buy one...Thanks again guys.

I like the flywheel that 588 Bantam has that he's putting in his, it has the pilot hole in it for the Power Glide convertor, no need to fab a bushing to adapt P/G convertor to BBF crank. Don't know what the cost is on it.

That is a neat one, but it's $395.00

Hi Duane,
first off, what everyone else is saying is what you SHOULD do. But, I did do what you are suggesting. With my big engine down I had a 460 that could drop in with a few mods. I used a Scat flexplate, with the JW crank adaptor, took three bolts and widdled them to points in the lathe. Threaded them into the convertor and set the convertor on the crank (with flexplate bolted to it). No matter where you align the convertor one bolt will be close to one of the four ford pattern holes or in a place you wouldn't want it. Since it was close to the bolt hole I just used it as a starting point and tapped the convertor down making an indention into the flexplate of where to drill the holes. The gm bolt pattern is smaller than the ford so basically the two aligned holes made an "8", the other two were nowhere near anything else. Then it was time to set it in and check convertor and starter clearance. the convertor needed to be spaced (thickness of a 7/16 washer) and the starter also needed a 3/8 washer to engage properly. This was my set up and yours could be radically different. I'm just saying, it can be done. Mine worked great but I took time to make certain everything was perfect. Just for reference I have a JW ultrabell and ultracase with a gm convertor using a CE .090" midplate, no factory midplate and the CE .090" flexplate spacer. I have seen .100" difference in crank flexplate flanges so keep this in mind also...

that's what i know
