I have an old 1958 Case forklift that we are trying to get running and the starter appears to be turning the wrong way and will not engage the starter drive. The motor will only turn one way no matter which way you wire it. We have replaced the drive, but it still will not engage the drive. Anyone have some input?
Thanks,
David

Have you thought about a positive ground? I Googled and came up empty!
Last tid bit.. I've run a battery down and recharged it with the posts swapped..
Best of luck and my 2 c..

Check this link:

1958 case tractor was 6 volt positive ground according to this.
Good chance your forklift should be the same.

Thanks for the help. The first thing we did was reverse the wires. The starter turns the wrong way even when you reverse the polarity. We have reversed the brushes, but nothing seems to reverse the motor. I'm going to try another starter shop today. The last we took it to said nothing was wrong with it and charged me $10.

Fixed! The starter was turning the wrong way and the 70 yr old starter repair guy twisted the brushes a little and presto! Fixed! $10. Now to see what else is wrong with this old POS.
Thanks,
David
