Lem Evans 05-23-2008, 09:25 AM Larry , you and family should be proud ....nice job !
Larry T 05-23-2008, 01:41 PM thanks, lem i had a all nighter going things were a little fuzzy.
this was a fun build that me and my dad did together.he is 72 years old and a retired automotive machenest that worked for napa for about 49yrs.when i was at home we would build 3-5 motors a week in the evenings.building everyday use motors and street strip motors was fun to me.i learned alot but i will not clame to know everything.this was the first motor my dad had built in 2 years.we did alot of prep work to insure that their was no problems.sure their was a bump in the road here and their but no big problems.for a motor build that is basicly out of the box purchase he was verry excited about it.now that he has seen the dino sheet,he wants to make a slow pass in the car!he hasen't been in a drag car in at least 40yrs.i am sure he is in for a surprise!
here is a picture of my dad during the build.

Larry T 05-23-2008, 03:22 PM no dought about it i was up their at mikes 2 days ago nice groupe of people.i am 510 miles from you guys here in asheville north carolina.i spent about 120.00 in fuel their and back  but it was worth the trip.
Embery 05-23-2008, 11:31 PM Damn impressive Larry. I'm guessing that MSD distributor is the one you got from me. I feel almost like a proud parent to know that it is residing in an 832 horsepower engine. Just let me know if you change your mind about the Edelbrock 800 Carb though. I'm sure your motor wouldn't lose more than 400 horsepower running it instead of the 1250 dominator. haha.
Larry T 05-24-2008, 02:01 AM yes that is the same distributor i got from you,it works verry well.i sent it to lem to get the bronze gear put on and new lite springs put in.i put you a better picture up so you could see it in its new home.thanks again....

Lem Evans 06-02-2008, 06:37 PM Larry , have you had a chance to get that monster in the car yet ?
Larry T 06-02-2008, 07:49 PM not yet lem,i just talked with the guy that's doing the chassie work and it maybe the end of june befor i get it back.he has a customer with 2 cars that he is building a front end for each and then i am next.i will be picking up the powerglide after work friday.i am confident i will meet my goal to make a pass in the car by the end of fall.

bruno 06-03-2008, 09:09 AM whats the reason for the aluminum spacers guys on the headers ?????

Cheating isn't it  Must be the "magic" rust on them :P
schmitty 06-03-2008, 12:42 PM Almost sacreligious, BBC headers and chebbie ORANGE RTV. At least he could have used black or green or BLUE. Very impressive power.
Very impressive results....
I wonder what a similar engine would make with 11:1 pump gas (93 oct) and maybe a hair less cam....hmmmm
I would opt for the 80s big hair cam myself.
Very nice numbers, 8) Cant wait to hear about track times! keep us posted.

Larry T 06-18-2008, 12:33 PM thanks guys,i owe a big THANKS to LEM and CHARLIE!when i called lem i knew i wanted the p51 heads and the motor to be a full roller.so we talked and he helped me pick out the best componets that i could afford.sence the block is a 2 bolt we didnt want to go overbord with hp and not to make the motor unreliable.i have left a little in the bag so i can use the nitrous when needed.

i called ptc about the converter to get information about it.they said it was spragless and should hold between 52-5600 on the trans brake.he also said it was the tightest 9" they make so it should be good for nitrous later on. 8)

hummmmm i hope you are rite......didnt blake have a 8" and then went with the 9" converter?if i remember correct he did or wished he had and that is why i went with the 9".
cook was trying to sale me a 8"but i knew it needed to be bigger.he told me the 8"is what he is useing in his cars.he has a 88 thunder bird with a 521 i think.he also has a new late 60's mercury cyclone with a 514,i wish i had my camera with me.i seen him run the T bird at shadyside with a mid 6 sec run,i think he runs pro bracket in his cars.
curt79 09-03-2008, 06:20 PM Just getting into the big blocks, was a windsor boy before. Got a SVO Ford 460 raceing block
Diamond pistons 11.2 coated 80 over
Kasse P-51's stock
Eagel bottom h-beams 6.8
4.5 stroke takes to 557 cid
1050 GB 4500 carb
Vic jr intake port matched
Hustler headers 2 inch to 3.5 collectors
Full solid roller with rocker gurdle on 1.73 ratio
2 sticks to try 718 with 308/318 on a 110
and a 790 with 278/281 on a 109
Going to spin to about 6-65, should have on the dyno in a month.
Have any idea how much it will make?
MtnMan54 09-04-2008, 07:28 PM Larry T,
When I saw the pic of your dad I immediately realized who he was. He did the block and crank machining for my 400M powered Ford EXP drag car. I hated to hear that he had retired as he was considered by many to be the best machinists in the region, especially on cranks. Not only that he's a great person to boot. He blew my mind one day when he showed me how to straighten a bent crank. If you only absorb a third of what he knows about you'll still be smarter than 90% of automotive mechanic/machinists.
Tell your dad that that ole 400M clicked off a string of mid 5.60s off the trailer with no tuning in some really nasty air this summer. I think he'll like that.

i will be sure to tell him i am sure he would be interested in how everything turned out.he talkes about some of the work he did on special projects people came in the shop with everynow and then.he still gets that gleam in his eyes when he talks about the cars he has had.the guys at the shop use to call him larry bernstene from some of the massave burn outs he did, thing is he's not a bernstene fan. as for me i am not the smartest candle in the box but at least my candle has a blue flame heheheh.

davracr 11-10-2008, 05:51 PM I grinned as I looked at your dad's picture. If he lost his hair on top and the mustache I be a spitting image of him. I'm only 65.
The advise to ghange builders is good. I had a guy help me with a build-up several years ago. He didn't seem to want to getr started on it like you described and when he finally, reluctantly, did , he rushed through it and it wouldn't pass tech. I had to go through it myself and correct many of his crappy welds and lay out a few things differently.
I'd been better off finding someone that wanted to build it instead.

VAN460 02-28-2009, 02:20 AM just a few question on the P-51's
Do they bolt to a std d1 block
Do you need special pistons
Do you need special rocker gear / guide plates etc
What headers do they take
Whats the lowest intake manifold that will fit

yes the p51 heads are a direct fit no mods needed.
yes you will need pistons that have the valve reliefs for the scj.diamond brand pistons is what i used and are a stock on the shelf item.
the rockers were lanati 1.7 stud mount nothing special off the shelf item.guide plates were scj ford replacement part off the shelf item.
i used the jomar scj stud girdle.they maybe other brands avalable as well but the jomar is top of the line.
anyone of our vendors on this forum can help you get what you need in a packadge deal.
i am not qualified to answer your question about the intake.i am sure someone that knows will chime in with the correct answer.
the headers that i have are from hooker for the 460 swap in to the mustangs.what i will do later on is use a set of charlies adapters and buy a 2-1/4 bbc header kit that you weld up your self.the adapter and bbc headers is what we used on the dyno.
VAN460 02-28-2009, 05:30 PM thanks for that
How much compression would you get on a 501 with flatops?
Im only asking as these seem to be well priced heads and i wouldnt mind some for my 501

Diamond's catalog says 12.5 to 1 with a 72cc combustion chamber.
Bruce Wilkie 02-28-2009, 11:16 PM I like this build. I'm doing a 528 (.060 over 4.3 stroke 6.8 rods)with 13.3 compression P51's port matched Weiand tunnel ram with two 750's 2.125 SuperComp headers. Hope to hit similar numbers. Had the carbs, ebay deal on the intake. Suspect overall similar output as Victor Domi. Price of good Domi pays for convertor. Hope to have it on dyno by end of April. I suspect it will be close in power will have to see how it fares for tq with the t-ram. I went a tid conservative on the cam to keep power peak under 7k. 290/298 advertised 264/272.050 about .725 net lift 110 LSA with 1.73 Scorpion rockers. Cam was originally intended for limited street pump gas and changed my mind the day I ordered the pistons! We'll see how it works out. It will eventually end up in a 71 Torino Brougham(lightened considerably shooting for 3400 lb staging weight). Should have enough to run the 6.0 heads up classes with a good bit of reserve for qualifying.

will do ken,
i was at matt's shop 2 weeks ago.he has installed the tubs, dash, steering collum, shifter, master cylinder, brake and gas peddle relocated.things left to do is battery box,tin work, front wheel limiters then we can put the motor in place for the motor plate welding.it seems like a short list but it takes a while hopefully i will have it back by the end of june.
Larry T 06-01-2009, 09:22 PM update 6/01/09 we were at the shop saturday droping off the motor and tranny.matt has to locate and weld the plates etc for the motor plates.he has a short list to finish up then its ready to paint.maybe in a week or 2 it will be ready to pick up wahoooooooo i cant wait.
my son made a video while we were their.he needs to slow down a little so we can see things better but you can get the idea of whats going on.

the front end is from AJE it orignaly had motor mounts for the factory hook up.i wanted the motor plates so while it was at the chassie shop that was the time to do it,matt added the brace on each side.the motor plate and mid plate is from skinny kid.matt said he normaly puts the motor lower but the instructions didnt call for that.i have about 2 1/2 inches all around the steering rack and oil pan.

Larry T 07-26-2009, 05:09 PM 7/26/09 update:
well guys i am not going to have the car finished until late september.i have many things done but i am only a one man band.i just finished the wireing i dont clame to be a wireing guru but the K&R kit makes things simpler.the next thing to tackel is the headers i am going to try and modify the hooker swap headers.the headers dont fit too well on the passenger side so i have purchased some J tubeing to fix the problem hopefully?their is a problem on the drivers side with the steering shaft rubbing may not be that big of a deal.
