Maverick Engine setback

Received my SFI specs last Monday and got out the drafting set.
Drew up the chassis floorplan basics, WB, windshield location, Mainhoop, etc.
Wheelbase will be lengthened from 102-105" up front. With the mid-mount at the begining of the windsheild, I have 8" engine setback. Is that too much?, considering the wheelbase? Car will be all 4130 with a A-head 557/glide. Plus a 24" 4-link and 16x33-15's
Thanks.

i think you will be fine, w/ the powerglide you won't have the low 1st gear as with a c-6 but you will still need wheelie bars. i'm installing my new 557 A-head in my maverick and i have also 8 inches of set back with stock wheel base 102 1/2 - 103.

i run 32-14 w/ 486 now and should be ok with the same gear/tire combo w/ 557.

let me know what gear ratio you end up with for your set-up.

good luck

Al do yourself a favor and put a set of 4.10 gears in it and use the torque you build for moving that car or a set of 3.90's, you will have big torque and torque moves it not the RPM. make the engine load up... my car weighs #3200 and I have 4.56and I have 17x33 slicks on mine and pulls like a bear... I also have a set of 4.30's for it if I run 1/4 mile...

Well, 8" of setback from the front spindle centerline to the furthest forward sparkplug hole would probably be a usable measurement for a 105" wheelbase BB car. The max of 10.5" setback for a 105" w/b car probably isn't necessary since were not talking about a small block/low launch torque number engine.

And since your planning to use a 4-link you will have a greater adjustment window to work with (vs a ladder bar) should your setback measurement choice not be 100% optimum for what the engine's actual power level ends up being.

Al, I have one suggestion. When you build it make sure you can run the biggest slick available & have room to grow. I would put a minimum of a 33 x 17 x 15 slick on back. If you ever plan to go a very large HP engine then I would look at making sure you could run a 16 x 16 bead lock wheel & tire combo.

Good talking to you yesterday.. :D

Thanks for the help guys,
Being a big torque monster that theese are, dont really think I need a 486 either. But well see. Thanks Chip. How about those pics! :)

Great talking to ya too Chris. Shoot me a pattern when your ready for those floor mats. Plan on runnin g the rear cage stringers as high as possible. And put a large as possible can to boot.

Just got back from looking at a old quansut hut building. Its in good shape. Since scrap is down, nobody wants to screw with it. Find out tomorrow.
Plan on setting it on a partial block wall. Hell, its 25X 40. Keep those fingers crossed!

Regards.
