Code Blue Racing 03-15-2009, 01:28 AM I know this is not a car, but I thought it might be a change of pace. I will keep updating as the progress continues.
Last year before the '07 season was out, I think it was while we were testing for the Thanksgiving Regatta at Rotory Park in Bullhead the PD asked us if we knew of anyone for towing on the water. I mention one company I knew of. They said that I should think about it. I did over the winter and we desided a few extra bucks couldn't hurt. So we started with a open bow Spectra 20. As we were stripping the boat we found that it had some dry rot. I began removing the damaged wood and removed some more and more and more, you get the picture. We kept trucking along on it in between work. The a Glencoe pops up in the boat spam section. It had a lot of good parts that came with it as well as a pump. So we bought it. It was not quite what we had expected but for the price I was happy with the deal. As we start to check things out on it we find it needs a new floor. No biggy easy enough. So we remover the old 3/4" plywood floor to find it rotted and the keel board broke loose from the boat. OK no biggy, we began removing everything. Then started over. First set of pics are what we bought.

Code Blue Racing 03-15-2009, 01:30 AM I can't find the demo pics. Here are some as the construction phases got rolling. I believe the glass I used was 7140 in between the keelboard and stringers. As you can see this boat now has a keelboard and 2 stringers. I also installed a rib for extra striegth.http://www.performanceboats.com/html/forums/picture.php?albumid=394&pictureid=2981

Code Blue Racing 03-15-2009, 01:34 AM Well being this is a service boat we needed a very durable coating on the floor that bonds well. We chose to use a 2 part epoxy garage floor paint. It covered very well, one coat. The kit we used will cover 250sq' and we used about 99.5% of it.

Code Blue Racing 03-15-2009, 01:41 AM The last 2 days have been quite busy as well, we got the silver base coat on finally ! We still have a bit more work ahead of us. The white and red striping then the clear top coat. When all that dries we will be appling the high tech reflective decals.

Code Blue Racing 03-15-2009, 01:42 AM Well here are some of the pics of prepping for the striping. Being I don't do this normally I figured I better messure everything. I marked the boat with pencile every three feet on the flat sections and in the corners of the bow and transum every foot to six inches. Code Blue Racing 03-15-2009, 01:44 AM Well being is is a 20' Cruiser I have to put the classic non scid back on. I asked on the paint section about how some do it, it helped. I have ended up desiding on the 30 grit sand. I found that if I put it on and let it dry, then brush the excess off then spray color over it, it gives me a nice aggresive uniform non scid surface. You can see from the pic I tried four versions before I settled.
http://www.performanceboats.com/html/forums/picture.php?albumid=394&pictureid=4411
As you can see from the picture the boat is fully masked off. I did it so that I can pull tape as I go for the additional colors. It kind of looks as if the boat is wearing a skirt and a slip or something like that.

Code Blue Racing 05-09-2009, 06:36 AM Well finally last week I was able to get back to work on the Glencoe. The engine is in and the exhaust tips have been installed. It has been a bit tough to go into the shop and not see my boat, it is quite empty in there without it. Today we worked on the steering. I hope to have it all installed tomorrow along with all the aluminum pieces sprayed with the anodize in a can. Once all of that is dry we can start installing the gauges. It will be nice to have it all wired up and ready for some testing. I will post up some pictures of the progress real soon.

Code Blue Racing 05-10-2009, 03:14 PM Here is some of the progress of the last couple of days. Now the main objective of this boat is as a work vessel not Bling or passenger comfort. Please remember that 99% of the parts used are either used or reconditioned. The aluminum parts were usually too stained to polish up quickly so they were painted for a uniform finish and color. The only new stuff on this boat is the paint, resin and wood.

It is large enough to fit a stow-away as well. As you can see Amanda thought it was cute to lay in it like it was a coffin. But then again it would be a good place to store the rum. Tomorrow we will be painting all the panels and hatch with more Epoxy Garage Floor paint. Then the tower will get built for the light bar and the crows nest. Then we can start on the wiring and reinstalling the gauges.

Thank you, hope to have it on the water very soon. Not quite sure yet. But when the engine was in other vehicals it sounded pritty good. Those tips have some silencers in them. They say it will make it 10db quieter, which is important when trying to listen to radio info.
Code Blue Racing 06-03-2009, 01:36 PM Well I have been working on the steering wheel that came with the boat. I felt that it was hidious looking and uncomfortable, not to mention it was rusted and ripped in a few places. After I took the jigsaw to it I started to shape it. Then I took SeaGoin Epoxy and filled in the voids. Today I am going to go to one of our local upholstery shops to get a estimate on covering it.

Well alot of work on this project has been done over the last month. I will post some pictures of the progress tonight. It has even been water tested for leaks. I am pretty dam proud to say when I replaced the transom wood I tried something different, a slight rocker. Well this made for a very tight transom adapter to transom seal. I also used a little 3M-4200 on the O ring to bowl. This helped hold the O-ring in place so when I slid the transom adapter on the O-ring would not slip. This was such a clean install I even amazed myself. I have been trying to find the leak on the Bennett diverter pump, hopefully I can nail that down today.
7-16-09
]Here are a few pics of the first items mounted on the new Transom. The reason for the two blowers is I want this boat to be as safe as possible. I have two other vents per side.

Being the existing vent holes were too big to mount the vent hose coupling I chose to use Sea Goin Epoxy putty to hold them in. I also did not like the way they looked when installed. That is when I desided to paint them the same as all the other hardware.

Well we took the boat out tonight on the river. Diverter pump works real good down not at all up. Found another leak, but this one requires alittle more work to fix. I upsized the input from the pump 3/8" npt to 1/2" npt to cut down the pressure. Well I must have cut a little too deep on the threads. But on the upside the two bilge pumps work great. Made a WOT run up river with 5 people and mufflers in, it GPSed at 45.1mph with no up on the diverter. I am very happy with the boat. A few little bugs to work out but all and all it is bitchen. Victor you are right about the ride, Wow smooth as silk. Tony thanks for comin out too. Down river GPS runs are totally awesome, 1,578 mph according to the hand held GPS.

Well today was pretty productive. Amanda fixed the diverter pump while Donna and I worked on the Jet. We were able to fix the pin hole in the suction housing and tighten the pump up a little as well. I switched from a standard wear ring to a shouldered one. I also back filled and blended in front of it. Now we are at .018" thrust and .036" radial/side clearances. We may test again later today.
Thanks Mike and Shelly for the package.

We still have not had a chance to take it out for another test run, but today we are. I will also post some new pictures of the progress. I split the water exit, one is now a dump and the other is going to the risers. It may make it a smige louder but less chance of reversion. I am also running silencers in the tips so it is pretty dang quiet anyway.
Jerry - Magic eraser plus CLR was used on the side panels and the seat, it helped a bit. But you can still see where the old seats were on the side panels.

Well we have done alot since that last time I posted. It has made 2 more shake down runs. It is really coming together nicely. I am putting a few more 12 volt ports, an under the bow LED and some jumper posts. I will also be modifying the Place Diverter, opening it up per AT, for the extra volume of water from the cut down 9.5 impeller. This should give us a bit more thrust volume which will help it tow better.
8-25-09
We ended up doing a bit more modifications to the pump. We have the AT high flow bowl, but I noticed the nozzle housing had a 1/4" flang that could cause a disruption in pressurized water flow. Instead of removing it all the way, I put a real nice radius on it which carried back into the nozzle housing 3/4". Then I noticed the middle of the nozzle housing, it had a sharp center section. I feel that it too would cause a disruption in exit flow, so I took the sharp edge down and radiused it that carried about a 1/2". Per Dustin at AT/Dom/Legend, we bored the nozzle adapter of the Place Diverter to 3.300" as well as the diverter nozzle. He said it will be a big difference, we hope to test tomorrow. My next step is to cut the nozzle to receive the fine tune nozzle inserts so I can get the modification perfect. I took .177" out of the nozzle. I am hoping this will help us tow up river with ease. I was able to finally purchase the 6" helm adapter and put a decent wheel on the boat. I am also hoping by this weekend I will have a stereo in the boat, it is real nice being able to hear yourself think while out on the water. I did install silencers in the slash cut 4" tips. I have also installed a Mallory Unilite dist. with vac advance. I figure with the load the impeller creates it is in need of all the help it can get. We shall see tomorrow.
On a side note we are two steps closer to our captains license. Home Land Security has made things a bit tougher, but it will all be worth it in the long run. It is kind of funny, I am now an official bar code with HLS. After a few more small hurdles I will be going to San Diego for a four day class. At which point I will be waiting about a month for the results. If I pass I will receive my Captains license with a towing endorsement. And we will be in business just in time for winter. The good thing is I have passed my DOT physical and drug tests with flying colors. But I knew that I would. HLS and USCG have done their background checks and I am clean as a whistle. Hopefully by next season I will have a second rescue boat. And the economy picks up a bit.
JRPM River Rescue is not just a water based service, we are fully capable to help out anywhere in the Tri State area. The are alot of off road marked trails that are quite fun and challenging as well as those that are not marked. JR Performance Motorsports is a full service company with a few smaller subsidiary businesses attached. We have JR Performance Motorsports(jet drive service and repair), e-PerformanceMarine.com(online web store), Vessel Services(launching, pick-up and delivery at your storage facility, prep, slip rental and service/repair). So if there is anything you may need while you are out in the Tri-State area don't hesitate to call no matter what time it is, we are always ready to help you.

Well later today PW Tony and I are going to hit the river for a test run. I changed the whole kitchen sink this time. New dist.,float level setting, engine water plumbing and put a stock rock grate back in. I also put a 6" helm adapter on with a 13" wheel. We also added a few snap brackets for the hatch rod, the transom light pole, the paddle, the pole & hook as well as the orange safety flag. I am hoping the decals for the side of the boat will be done tomorrow. We have also decided with the help of VictorFB on doing an aluminum tower over the steel one I was planning. I am picking up a Life jacket at PetSmart, for my dog later today so he can come out for the first time. We are going to shoot a few pictures to show the work done to this point as well.
I need a decent stereo for the boat with a USB port to power the on-board computer. I don't want to spend a fortune and only need about 200 watts.
I am looking for something alittle bit bigger than this for onboard air. I have a air tank on board to store 300psi.

Well since the last post on this thread things have been very crazy and emotional for us. It has been the fastest 3 weeks I have ever seen. We have made it through the first battle, and start the next battle this week.
Last Sunday my crew and I took the boat out for another test. We had changed a few things trying to overcome the big dead spot in the throttle on accelleration. I was pretty sure the problem was ignition. So I had tried quite a few different ignition set-ups. Then I changed the fuel pump and then the accellerator pump caming. No matter what I did it was still there. I was told while sitting at a beach that the AFB style carbs don't work on jet boats. Now I had run one before without any problems, but it was a smaller lighter boat with a whole lot less impeller. So we decided to try it without the K&N Stub Stack. It made a huge difference, there is still a slight dead spot but I can live with it. I am going to try a Holley carb on it just to see how it acts. But the boat ran spectacular after removing the stack. We were able to pull a solid 4400 rpms out of the 9.25" OD impeller. Now this impeller is a 9.5" AT that all we did was cut the OD down to fit the modified 9" AT High Flow Bowl. I wish we would have had the GPS with us as it felt like it was running faster than it has so far. I am working on a custom rockgrate loader, I have seen a few of the Whitewater jet rockgrates and have been trying to somewhat copy them for this one, we shall see how it works out.
Here is a few pictures of the modified hatch hinge. We cut and then heated it so we could bend the hinge to fit the back of the boat and the hatch, then we welded the stainless hinge.

You can see we added a 12 volt outlet to the transom.

We also added jumper terminals to make it easier to jump other boats with dead batteries.

Even though it is hard to see, it shows a few of the accessories that we have in the boat.

It was completely necessary to install a 6" column and a basic chrome spoke wheel. It looks 100% better and is alot more comfortable for me.

A few times at night up river we lose water on the way back. I have one of my guys ride the bow with the spot light, off plane. We were using an extention cord but I could not stand it, so we mounted another outlet behind the bow light.

Well last weekend we had our first real gig with the boat yes it was a freebee but it was very important work. We were race suport/rescue/tow boat for the Thanksgiving Regatta in Parker. I also raced the boat in Comp Jet. It did surprisingly very well. It tops out around 50+mph but we were able to collect valuble APBA Comp Jet points for the 2010 season grabbing 4th place points. The only casulty on the boat was a recylced forward reverse cable. We will get that replaced quickly and have the boat ready to help out at the next race, Havasu Landing in January.
Code Blue Racing 12-09-2009, 02:49 AM That looks like a LOT of work. Any idea of how much it will weigh when done? I'm diggin' it. :)
I am betting somewhere between 3500lbs & 5000lbs.
Code Blue Racing 12-09-2009, 03:05 AM Great progress!!
That boat is lookin great. You and Amanda (and whoever else!) have done a great job. Its cool to get the kids working on it too, gets the next generation involved.
Bill
It was quite a project. We have all learned and relearned a lot. Amanda is my #1 helper. She is also a racer so it has helped her learn a bit more so she can have a better understanding of how and why. She is getting ready to do some mods on her race boat in the next few days. Things have been real hard around here for us. I now have been diagnosed with Soft Tissue Sarcoma, a form of cancer. I had 18.5 cm of tissue removed back in Sept. and did a short round of chemo. Two days before the Parker 300 I was told I have another tumor in my neck, this one is a bit more of a problem as I am in need of neck surgery already. If any of you remember back to the Comp Jet race at Long Beach in '08. Last Thursday they were able to remove 22cc from the tumor. But I am now having problems with my left arm, it does not work right and I get an extreme burning feeling when I lift a glass of Milk. I hope to see the Dr. before the week is out.
billandlori 12-09-2009, 09:30 AM Beautiful boat Jim!! The attention to detail is great!!
We hope your health problems get resolved soon, getting old sucks:D
Good luck to Amanda and her racing!!
Bill
Code Blue Racing 12-09-2009, 09:49 AM Our drive to win is one of the things that is and will get us through all this crap. I have a great family and crew. We are making a few changes on our new Comp Jet boat to make it a little better and easier for me, it will be like racing with one arm tied behind my back so to speak. It still works but not the way I wish it would or could.

I picked it up for $600 and spent about $5K total, but I had alot of good used parts.
Code Blue Racing 12-21-2009, 02:06 AM My next big job is making the tower for the emergency lights and work lights. I have planned the job from the beginning of the build so it should be a little easier to wire it up. It has its own power supply and fuse panel as well as a stereo cap to help protect the batteries and alt.

Being it is not anything special it has stock rockers right now. I think rollers will fit with-out gurdle.

Code Blue Racing 03-01-2010, 02:39 AM Well we have made the light bar, I am not too sure I like it though but we shall see. In a few weeks we are fitting it with a boom, to add in recoverys. Then we will tackle the wet platform. This is going to be to add in recovery of Jet Skis and small race boats, kneel downs, it will also give the divers for room to work. It will extend 3' off the transum, back of the boat. I did get the stereo wired as well. I am bringing in a extra power wire for the lights and a capasitor to help protect the alt. and batteries.
