Cool stance from the rear. I'd like to see a side shot of the whole truck if you have one.

Finally got to get some passes this year , today . First pass was a disappointing 12.97 , second was a much better 12.22 ( finally got up on the converter ) , third pass I almost cracked the 11's 12.092 . Unfortianetly the radiator made some contact with the crank pulley on the third pass , gonna have to get out the torch and some solder . I am gonna try to come up with the money to change to 4.30's before I go agian and take out another 4 degrees of timing . Initial is at 20 right now for a total of 36 gonna knock it down to 16 for a total of 32 and see how she likes that . Oh yeah the truck is still jetted a little rich so bring on the warm weather .

After some discussion about gearing I am going 4.56 asap . and I am installing an electric water pump drive before my next outing . I figured the extra power from not driving the water pump should be worth a tenth . Does anyone have experience with that ?

Well I replaced the radiator and installed the electric water pump drive kit . It took about 2 hours to get the water pump drive kit on cause the instructions suck from moroso and I ended up installing it on driver side directions said to install on passenger side . It works great though truck never went over 170 at the track in 80 degree weather . I didnt hit the 11's like I had hoped though first pass was 12.082 followed by two 12.111's I set timing at 32 total but I dont think it helped any . I think I may put a little more jet in it .The mph was up to 109.86 vs. 108 on earlier runs I did go through the traps at 6000 finally . I have to change the valve springs then I think I am leaving it alone other than headers . Time to make it look like it deserves it to . The track photographer got a great pick of me leaving that I had to buy . I may have to scan it so I can post it , you can tell the suspension works ! :D:D:D

What kind of compression is that Ranger engine pushin?

Nice! what does it weigh?

I bet you'll pick up a half-second with even a set of crappy headers!

Won't those 4.56 gears be a bit much?

The ranger weighs exactly 2750 without me in it and compression is 9.6:1 ( pump gas friendly ) . I have rethought the 4.56's they are too much I wanted to go through the traps at 6500 and was going through at 5300 before . Sunday it went through the traps at 6000 all 3 passes I shifted at 5000 also . The valve springs are 5 years old so they are my next thing to address . The engine dropped from 124 to 108 over past 3 years and after a carb swap is back to 110 so valvesprings will hopefully get me back to the power it once made . I plan on having headers made for it in next couple weeks if I get enough hours at work rain has been hampering my header fund this week . ;)

I really want to get this to run elevans without headers I have been so close last 4 passes . I think I am gonna give QFT a call my carb is rich at idle but lean on the top . I think all I have to do is swap some airbleeds but not exactly sure . I backed timing down to 32 total from 36 total and it seemed to hurt power so next time I can T&T gonna play with the timing . 12.082@109.96 best to date . God I really need to change those valvesprings .

Have you tried cutting off the exhaust?

bigblok86ranger
06-06-2009, 02:25 PM
I ran it without mufflers last year it didnt seem to help at all but alot of things have changed so maybe I should try it again . I had been thinking of putting some short pieces of 3 inch dumping straight down out of manifolds . I am getting headers made as soon as I can .

Well I broke down and got a set of mustang headers to hack up I dont have the money to have custom built right now so I am gonna make these work . Almost got the driver side on now just need to get the back tube on , I started with the driver side I figured it was the hardest . Looks like I will have to modify one tube beside the frame clearancing I have done . The steering shaft I just built wont clear

Good luck with gettin the headers fitted on there

Well got the headers on but havent been able to get to the track yet . I just picked up a 2000 Ranger that I plan to turn into my project truck initial measurements look really good should fit better than current truck .

HEY ARE YOU SAYING YOUR GOING THREW THE TRAPS 6000RPM WITH 28X10.5 SLICKS
AND 4.11 GEARS! I HAVE 4.30 GEARS IN MY CAR AND WAS WONDERING WHAT MY TRAP SPEED WOULD BE! WITH MY GEAR! IS THAT CAM A SOLID FLAT TAPPED!

bigblok86ranger
08-17-2009, 07:17 PM
Yeah it is a 294S I wouldnt suggest it though there are a lot better cams available . I had a C460 in it before that ran way better . But You read right I was going through the traps at 6000 @ 109.96 to be exact with M/T 28x10.5's .

PS I pulled the engine out of the 86 and am putting together a 2000 that I can drive on the street and strip . :D

Put the timing at 35 degrees, it will like it, how much wheel spin you got, what air pressure you running, the least you can run without down track high speed drift, that should put you in the 11's easy.

bigblok86ranger
08-21-2009, 08:18 PM
No wheel spin ladder bars and coilovers rear suspension with front drag shocks . I had timing at 20 initial and 36 total and was told that was too much that I would go faster with less timing . Well I installed electric waterpump drive kit and lowered timing to 32 total and new plugs made no difference . I figured the waterpump drive kit would for sure get me that .100 that would get me into the elevans but after backing timing down it went the same speed at same et . But I have torn the truck apart to put my 2000 together I also found that I had 3 bad plugwires when I started the truck to show my nephew at night , couldnt see the spark jump during the day . Got new plugwires new plugs and cap and rotor . I have to build headers for the 2000 but am hoping to have it done by labor day weekend . If you would like to see more about that project it is "Just another 2000 ranger " thread . I am using 4.10's in that truck also but stock rear suspension with slapper bars .
