Smasher O'Brannan 05-23-2009, 11:04 PM finally got off me arse and started gutting my 49' Hudson supersix sedan. It has a mostly stock 390FE/c6 in it now with the original 4.11 geared hudson rearend. (had a flat six, really low gears for motivation).....The car was just a future project untill about two weeks ago when I got tired of looking at it and wondered what the real shape of the body was in.....I shouldn't have pursued it!.....More rust out and swiss cheese than I've ever seen!......but it'll all be fixed! I'm thinking backhalf and cage next.

Smasher O'Brannan 05-23-2009, 11:10 PM I think i'm definately going to back half it and build a new subframe while I have all the sheet metal away from it....Believe it or not this thing is a unibody car!.....Hudson was one of the first to use this design. they called it a "stepdown" model......it was the first of its kind to have the floors below the frame instead of on top of it.....This car sat over nine inches lower than a comparable car at the time.
billandlori 05-23-2009, 11:23 PM Is that ever a cool car!!
That is some weird rust on the bottoms of the doors. Living in Ontario, we see lots of rust from all the salt they put on our roads. Never seen it like that.
Its neat how the 1/4's come off.
Should be a wild ride with a back half and cage.
Good luck!!!
Bill
Smasher O'Brannan 05-23-2009, 11:24 PM thanks!.....it'll be a challenge!

Yep!.....Rained like a hell last two days......I'm sure I have plenty now!!!!
billandlori 05-27-2009, 06:36 PM Awww that sucks.:( Thats one of the drawbacks of your fresh-air shop!! I guess even spraying WD40 on them just makes more work down the road to get paint to stick.
Is your insurance paying up for the shop that blew away?
Good luck,
Bill

Smasher O'Brannan 06-12-2009, 05:22 PM finally got the new panels welded in to the rear door and had to fab a new weatherstrip channel. I think I could have done better but I definately need a real metal break....and a shop, damn its hot!.....Anyway I think it turned out good enough to smear a little bondo over and then spray it.:D

billandlori 06-12-2009, 10:45 PM No, sadly I haven't had time to work on anything. The trucking is really cutting into my car tinkerin' and drinkin' time!! Well, I think I will be quitting next week, that will fix em!!
I got the Thunderbird's trans fixed but now it leaks trans fluid:mad:, the Lincoln is still waiting thinking about selling her. The Caddy is begging me to work on it (yes I hear voices...). The wife's Nova is needing paint and assembly then its DONE!!
Bill
jpierce55 06-13-2009, 07:49 AM It will look great, can't wait to see it.
A little story, everytime I don't have a job I come across amazing deals on old cars. It is 40's and early 50's cars I love. One year I came across a classic car lot going out of business. He had three cars left a pair of Hudsons for $1500 or a 45 Packard for 1000. The Packard was all there escept for one fender/hood, the little things were there. No job, but had the money. The next day I got a job went straight to the lot as all three cars were being towed out :(.
I really want a 53 Chevy, a 49 Pontiac, Old's Rocket, Packard, Hudson, or something similar. So this build makes me a little jealous ;).

Nothing like Murphy's Black, the only "beer" I can handle drinking.
Smasher O'Brannan 06-19-2009, 03:39 PM I finally pulled the FE out and I have a good bit of stuff to swap around and modify, but the 385 is definately going in instead. Been daydreaming about for some time. The 390 was mostly stock with exhaust logs, so I didnt really have much clearance issues. With the fat block and full headers I can see I'm going to have problems with the ancient center steering setup. I'm looking into updating the front susp. and steering with something more modern like a rack or something like the original mustangs rear steering setup with drag link. Either that are a whole new front stub, which I'm hesitant to do but know It would be beneficial. Anyway here's a few pics of a d1ve 429 block being mocked up.

billandlori 06-19-2009, 04:37 PM Looks great Smasher!!
Glad your going with the 460!! Kinda thought it might go that way:D, its kind of a bad influence around here!!
There sure is a bunch of room around the top of the engine, how does the bottom fit? The Sanderson block hugger headers might give you a bit more room if your not looking for max performance.
Go man go!!
Bill
Al Martin 06-19-2009, 04:45 PM Smasher,
For a new front Suspension, go with a late model Crown -Vic unit. Dont know your frame width, but they damn near bolt in on mid-50's ford trucks. The way to go for a boat like yours.
Al
Smasher O'Brannan 08-23-2009, 10:28 PM getting back on the hudson finally!:D.......still a ton of body work and fabbing up new parts.
billandlori 08-23-2009, 10:31 PM Good to hear Smasher!!
