Project Cobralcon

It's about time I started a Car Buildup thread since the Cobralcon has just come off the rotisserie after a 3 year "vacation".

Actually the idea for this car germinated in 1965 when I wanted to put a 427 in my '63 Falcon Futura, 4 sd. 260ci bought new. It didn't happen!

A few years ago I decided if I was going to "get her done" before it was time to leave this planet I better get my rear in gear. It has been slow but I think I can finally see the finish line.

Here are some pics to get this thread up to date:

OK, i'm just trying to get the feel of pic posting etc. The first post was how the car sat for a few years after the basic frame, tubs, roll bar, etc. had been completed. Rust was just surface from not priming new metal after fabrication. Looks bad but it was really sound.

From that point we moved on and had the body chemically dipped and epoxied so we didn't have to worry about surface rust any longer.

After Epoxy started some mock ups and body work.

Carl, "Cars by Carl" is responsible for 3 of these pics minus the pullys and carburetor. It has been in and out of the car several times but thank the lord for the foam block, it saved a lot of time and effort.

The engine goes back in the car for the last time this coming Tuesday, a real milestone in the build.

bbfalcon

The heart of Cobralcon is the 523ci BB but the "bling" is being put together in these shots even though you can't really see it. The firewall, the 2 fender aprons, under the hood and under the trunk deck lid are all covered in 18 gauge, grade 8, lineless stainless steel. To say this was a chore is tremendous understatement.

It is done and all who anything to do with it are relieved it is successfully completed. More in the next set of shots.

bbfalcon
05-24-2009, 11:26 AM
Here's the last of the catch up posts.

The rear is a built narrowed 9" and the fuel tank is aluminum.

The shot of the engine bay is with the stainless installed. The white is a protective covering to protect the grade 8 stainless. It is going to be tempting to remove it Tuesday after the engine is installed to get the effect but I'll just have to keep reminding myself that there is much to do that requires that protection for awhile yet!

Hope I haven't bored any of you to tears with this non-racing application of the BBF.

Here are the shots from Friday right after Cobralcon came off the rotisserie and had a couple of items installed. It was a big moment for me since it had been so long since I had seen it on the ground.

The shots of the engine bay are actually finished. All the white with the blue masking tape is protective covering for the mirror stainless steel that was used to line the firewall and fender aprons. Except for the seams down each side where the fender lip will attach, both the firewall and aprons were bonded in with a methacrylate adhesive which I found to be many times stronger than 2 part epoxy.

Here are a few shots of the engine in place. We need to raise it slightly b/c it has less than 1/16" clearance to the Mustang II cross member and would feel better with at least 1/4".

This is awesome. I have a very similar plan in a 65...mostly street car.

Which trans are you using and how much tunnel mod did you have to do?
How much header do you plan on using and who is going to make them?

Good luck!

Headers are Coated shorty headers FF460 from Sanderson. The rest of the exhaust system is polished stainless by Pypes and Stainless Specialties http://www.stainless-specialties.com/ and the electric cutouts are Pypes as well. All 3".

As for the tranny tunnel, it was/is a monster to cover the C6 but I just took it to a new shop and the first thing the guy there did was take it out and cut it down to size to give me and my passenger MUCH MORE foot room. The emphasis of the old shop is drag racing and the new one hot rodding. Shop 1 guy is thinking, who cares about foot room, you're only in the car a few minutes. Hot rodding shop emphasis is driving and comfort as well as function and immediately the red flag went up, how the heck are you going to reposition your right foot while driving any distance?

Long winded but I think you see what I'm saying, it all depends! I do like a flat to for mounting switches, gauges, etc. as opposed to a round one. Kind of incorporates a console right into the design.

Here's a shot of the tranny in an early state but it gives you an idea of what you need to cover.

Wow, that's seemingly huge! Thanks much for the reply. I want to use an overdrive tranny, so we'll see what happens with my tunnel mods or what will happen.

I'm aware of Sanderson and realize that's what I may have to use, or get something custom made...which would be much more expensive, of course. I'm a bit worried the Sandersons would be a bit small for the 650 - 700 hp i'm looking for.

Wanting to run the master cylinder under the dash.

Here is the car I just got http://www.racingjunk.com/category/1064/Ford/post/1526002/1965-Ford-Falcon-Hardtop-No-Post-Roller.html

And do you still need that foam block? :D

Just a quick update with pics to come next week.

Sometimes ya go a step or two backwards to make progress. Well that's just what happened to Cobralcon.

The rear shocks had to be reset to level the car left right. The engine needed to be raised b/c there was only a piece of paper clearance between the Mustang II cross member and the engine pan. Now there's an inch. Rear end was 1.75 inches off center and had to be reset. The line from the tranny tail output shaft to the rear end was off center by 9/16 of an inch and was also off vertical from where it should be and had to be reset.

While all those issues had to be corrected the one that didn't have to be changed but needed to be was the tranny cover and tranny tunnel. Well the one you see in my earlier pics is now trash and a new one has been installed. What a nice idea, to actually have room for the gas pedal and be able to move my feet around a little.

Now ready to move ahead and move fast. Want to get this buggy to the paint shop for final paint and fitting so I can hit the road. Can't hardly wait to push the electric button to open the dumps and see the reaction I get, especially if the law is close by. LOL

Really great job! Sorry to hear about the all the problems, but that's good that you addressed them sooner rather than later. Can't wait to see it painted and rolling...

Now, I'm pretty sure I'm going to run a lentech aod of some sort and hoping it won't be as big as a c6. I reeeally want overdrive. Oh, and are you using motor mounts or motor plates?

Oh, and again, still need that foam block??? :D

bbfalcon
06-08-2009, 08:29 PM
Listed some items that needed fixing in earlier post and here are the pics to show progress. In particular Windsor you'll see how much the tranny cover and tunnel can be cut down to the size it should have been to begin with which can apply to your aod as well. Remember that the aod isn't a lot smaller than the C6 but my first attempt of the cover was clunky for sure. Think you'll like the new result.

What color are you going to paint it

bbfalcon
06-20-2009, 07:00 AM
The paint scheme is simple and not so.....

Deep rich black, that's the simple part, the not so is the black purple pearl which is almost like a ghost purple that is already powder coated on the bumpers, grille, headlight buckets and tail light surrounds. It will also be painted as a center stripe on the stainless that extends across the doors and quarter panels.

The final paint design feature is the rest of the chrome/stainless (not that there will be all that much since the trunk, hood and most of the rest of the body is shaved), that which is left has a "brushed" effect that replaces the high shine original treatment. That includes the fender arrows which have a brushed treatment and were taken apart so there is no backing allowing the high gloss black to shine through.

The interior is black/gray with silver and violet/purple highlights.

The final design feature will be the Cobralcon image air brushed as a ghost image in the front fender scallops as well as being embossed on the interior door panels. That's about it.

Yes, the first 3 sections were formed, welded together and bolted into place (with appropriate seam sealer that can be easily cut if need be). From the end of the third section back the rest of the drive line tunnel is not removable and is there for the long haul.

You can see the bolts in one of the pics I posted on 6/10/09.

Headers are Coated shorty headers FF460 from Sanderson and the whole exhaust system is 3 inch 304 stainless. Yes, I am using motor mounts with a mid plate to help combat any real torque issues that may arise. To say it is a tight fit is understatement but they do fit with the motor mounts which had to be custom made. The Sanderson FF460 is a shorty header but for my purposes, not a problem. IMO the neat feature of the exhaust system is the electrically operated dumps. Just push a button and you're ready to go LOL.

Yes, it is almost time to fire off the heart of Cobralcon. All engine wiring is complete, fuel lines connected as are water hoses so either the end of the week or the first of next will be time for the proof. We're mocking up the exhaust tomorrow to make sure there are no issues with the X pipe and that there is room for the cut outs etc.

The front fenders have been fit and are on and the trunk popper and emergency cable have been installed and are working fine, just need to patch the last hole in the trunk lid.

Will let you know how the firing goes along with pics.

Few pictures to update progress through today but especially the electric operated exhaust dumps are installed and working. (no exhaust yet but the doors open and close)LOL My pics aren't very good at displaying how they are integrated with the system but the dumps are installed at the end of the rear of the X pipe which is unusual but necessary due to space and ground clearance considerations.

You may have mentioned, but which MII front end did you use?

Windsor,

It was purchased a long time ago ('97 '99 time frame) from http://www.arizonanova.com/

The folks at RC Motorsports, who I have done business with over the net and in person on several projects believe Arizona Nova copied their design so it is safe to assume that the two designs are very close even if they weren't copied. If I were looking for one I'd do business with Willie and William at RC http://www.rcmotorsports.net/ not because I have anything against Arizona but because they are here in South Carolina and if need be I can make the 300 mile round trip in a day to resolve any issues.

BTW I've been looking for a large enough box to ship that mock block with no luck yet. Will let you know when I find one if you're interested.

Awesome...thanks! Yes, I've already had email correspondence with RC about using their kit and they say they've already got all of the BBF issues figured out in the early Falcons/Mustangs. I'm kicking around the idea of using a strut kit, but I just think it'll be easier to use a MII kit.

Let me know if you find anything to ship the mock block ;) And can't wait for you to finish up!!!

As you have determined I didn't build the car for the track........but........I'll have to take it to a TT once just to get a time on it. It was built for comfort and driving and that's just exactly what I'm going to be doing with it.

Reason I asked about Jackson is IHRA is having a big meet there this weekend that a friend of mine is running in the 6.40 class. He's a bit misguided in that he runs a Nova but does pretty well.LOL

Unless something unexpected happens Cobralcon will be fired on Monday!

In fact, part of the reason for firing is to be able to drive it onto the trailer for its ride to the paint shop.

I'll be trying to video the actual starting and hope for NO drama whatsoever. The engine was actually fired by Carl (carsbycarl) who built the engine and did the cam timing so this is more of a re-firing but it has been sitting for about 2 years waiting for The Day. Of course we have oiled the cylinders and turned it on a regular basis so as to keep everything in a well lubed condition. I'm getting really antsy at this point and just want to get the rest of the wiring done and hit the GO button.

When I get the car back from paint there will still be a few things to complete but it will be a driver at that point and after a quick trip to my favorite front end alignment shop that's exactly what it will be!

Thanks for all ya'lls interest and comments. I hope I can figure out how to post the vid since the only thing I've ever posted on any website is pics. But we'll get there I'm sure!

All for now,

Hal R.

Technically this is not the first time the engine has ever been fired, Carl fired it to do the cam timing. This is the first time it has been fired in South Carolina and in Cobralcon, the car it is tasked with getting me to the grocery store from time to time LOL.

At any rate here I'll attempt to post the vid:

Cobralcon is in the paint shop as of this past Wednesday. The hood and trunk deck lid will be trimmed and returned to me for attaching mirrored stainless to the underside of each before final painting of them. In the meantime the car is getting ready for one really deep black paint job with purple pearl accents and purple ghosted emblem on each fender and scripted "Cobralcon" ghosted in purple on each side of the cowl scoop. That's the plan, will post pics as soon as they are available.

Here are a couple of shots as I got her ready for the ride to the paint shop:

Looks like I should have the car back a week from this coming Wednesday which I believe is September 23rd which still gives me plenty of time to get it ready for the initial show at Daytona Turkey Run over T'giving. I want to get some in progress pics this week but right now I'm not sure when I can get to the shop.

Going stir crazy right now so I've started some stir crazy projects like coming up with a variation of the logo that will go on the front of the fenders ghosted in purple and I used some of the exce$$ mirror chrome to make 1'x4' mirrors to show the bottom of the car. Other than that it's wait and wait and wait but at least it won't be as long as it has been!!

Here are a few pics of Cobralcon as of today. I visited the paint shop just as it was being cleared. Paint should be done come Friday morning so I have to start looking at insurance and plates real soon.

First is the car in final primer.....

Well, that's all I have at the moment. In fact I took a couple today "after the clear dried". But the car was then moved out of the spray booth and the booth was blown clean for the next job. To say my pics show dust is understatement. Not the bad kind of dust (that which gets into the clear) but still dust that settled on the car. Now I was well satisfied with what I saw but the painter is going to sand and then put on some more clear before final sanding and buffing. No more pics after these until next Wednesday or Thursday, the new promise completion date.

Title sounds like a song I used to know but today Cobralcon is being buffed out and polished and just maybe I'll have some full pics to post tomorrow or at least by Monday.

Went to the paint shop yesterday and Richard buffed out a small section on the rear fender so I could see what the final buffed out job was going to look like. I was satisfied!

Killer project! Congrats and I'm in line with everyone waiting for the completed pictures :D

Me too!

Looks like this will be a long weekend.....

Scheduled to pick up the car Monday and will post up some pics shortly after I have it.

Yesterday I gave final approval for a late course correction on the trim. I had "brushed" all the stainless and pot metal with red (medium) scotch brite and it looked good. That was ok for the stainless but the pot metal spears that go on the front fender are pot metal and were unprotected metal. After some discussion decided to color match and paint then clear them. Now the rest of the trim looked inconsistent so it got the same treatment. Not a big deal but a change that took some time. So glad I went this route, the trim looks glorious!

Learned something from my paint guy that I'll pass along as a hint. If you end up with raw metal (as I did with the pot metal spear) don't just clear coat it for protection. He said he had done this with part of a tank on a custom bike (his own) and in about a year the clear started flaking. Need to go with an epoxy paint and then clear.

Should be posting up some pics Monday evening....

This is one awesome looking ride. Have they already done the final paint polishing?
I am contemplating building a Falcon myself. What engine crossmember are you using. I would like to find a weldin front cross as well as sub frames.
Once again excellent example of a Falcon done right.

Any info would be greately appreciated.

Pictures at best are an indication of what's what but certainly not "true" depictions. The fenders are not buffed and polished but the rest of the car is and that's just too hard a call from the pics. Add in the flash on some but not all shots and that really messes with things. The final buff polish came out better than I had anticipated, at this moment we only have the hood left, just waiting for the booth to clear.

The front Mustang II cross member is from Arizona Nova. Today I'd go with RC Motorsports out of Florence, SC just because they are so close to me and provide great personal service. If you're a member of the tffn website you can find a very detailed buildup on Cobralcon there starting with dip strip right on up to today. It is listed under "Customs" which requires permission to view but that's only to insure those who are not inclined toward customs leave those of us who are alone.

Send me a PM for any specifics you may have and I'll see what I can dig up from the build and/or remember. The remembering is the hard part for me!

Good luck with your plans and build,

Hal R

Took these shots yesterday even before replacing the valve covers or cleaning up the mirrors but just had to post them. This is really what makes Cobralcon unique, at least I haven't seen another with this use of mirrored stainless.

Kind of looks like the first 16 cylinder engine in a Falcon LOL.

Car looks great! I'm in the middle of a BB Falcon build myself. I just posted the pics titled 1965 Ford Falcon. I'd be interested in your input. It looks like you have gone with the FE. Is that correct? I'm interested in getting your input on the hood clearance. I noticed you went with a dual plane. Was that to fit it under the stock hood? For the life of me, i can't figure out how to not have too much poking out of the hood if anything. i have considered the efi throttle bodies that improve clearance, or go for it with a weber style efi or carb set up and just own the stacks coming out of the hood, or finally the cheapest route of going carb with a single "Mr. Gasket" velocity stack. Just don't know how far it going to stick out and if it's going to look ridiculous. Your input is welcome.

Thanks for all the comments, it is appreciated.

Not too much left on the punch sheet at this point (thank goodness). Just a couple of larger items. Probably the biggest is the A/C install which takes several hours and maybe 10 or so hours of detail work. The interior is all cut out and once the logo gets back from the embroider vendor it will only be a couple of days to finish it off.

The date I'm working toward is one week from tomorrow which gives me time to get a computer alignment and take care of DMV paperwork. My wife and I will be leaving for Daytona on Thanksgiving morning since we are showing the car at the Turkey Rod Run. So as for wrapping things up, a week from tomorrow is IT! I'll wrap up this thread when I get back from Daytona with a photo blog of sorts. I should also have some pre-show pics to post next week.

Everyone have a great weekend,

Well it looks like the interior is going to take me right down to the wire as far as making Daytona Turkey Rod Run. I won't be getting the car until Tuesday morning out of the interior shop so it's go go go but I'll make it even if there are a couple of things that still need doing, like a decent shake down cruise!

I might have to park and unload outside the track rather than take A1A down from St. Augustine each day but that all depends........

Here are a couple of shots, one with the engine compartment at least partially cleaned up and also a pre-installed door panel complete with Cobralcon emblem.

To wrap up this thread I'll post a few pics of the Daytona Turkey Run. Cobralcon was/is about 98% complete, still a few things to do but it was presentable for the show.

The first pic shows just how large the crowd was filling all the roadways and making driving a car, especially one that hadn't been driven, a challenge. Cobralcon loaded up and stopped 3 times while I was trying to figure out where to go and each time people gathered around to look and take pics. That was on Friday. Saturday I returned to the speedway without the car and just did some shopping and generally was a spectator myself while the wife spent time at the Mall across the highway. Worked out well for both of us LOL.

From here on I don't plan on posting further to this thread, the build is complete, but if anyone has a question just send me a PM and I'll get back with you.

Today is engine day Carl, we'll be tuning it to get rid of the loading at idle and making some other adjustments as needed. The engine is awesome and if I ever need another I'll be in touch.

Ricky,

Actually there will be set of more complete pics once the car is 100% finished, right now about 98%.

The wheels are all 18" and the fronts are 9" wide and rears are 10". Tires are Nitto 555's fronts 225/45R 18 and rears 298/45R 18.

Turning radius is wide but I haven't measured as of yet but it works and I probably won't measure. Didn't try to build a canyon carver :)

Haven't posted in awhile but winter (even here in South Carolina) has put a damper on progress.

The hood has been re-configured to an all metal set-up with a lower contour scoop. I think it looks better and fits the "flow" better.

As soon as I get the punch list complete I'll be posting up some vids and pics of the completed project.

Finally the punch list is at least temporarily about completed and I'll be picking up Cobralcon from where some work was done including a few paint fixes tomorrow, nothing major on that. I'll post up some shots on Wednesday, especially the interior which is finally complete with padded dash, tachometer, chrome trim and properly installed headliner.

I know most on this website are more leaning toward performance than what I'm doing now but there is one thing that has been added to the punch list that should help in that arena. Recently when tying the car down on the trailer I noticed the engine had moved. Now I've only driven the car total about 5 miles, so I was concerned to say the least. When I got it up on a lift I found where the oil filter and a header pipe had rubbed and the rubber in the motor mounts was all but squeezed out.

D&D Motorsports has supplied me with front motor plate and mid-plate as well as torque limiters which will be installed right after the Pensacola Show coming up on the 26th and 27th. I can't get it done before because I'm not sure what all this is going to encompass since we will also have to trim the oil pan for more clearance with the steering rack. The fun just keeps on coming!!!

Good to hear an update as I follow this one very closely!

Question, seeing how this is primarily a cruising car, why don't you just put in solid motor mounts and stick with a poly/rubber trans mount? Sounds like you already have a mounting system that works but just need improved mounts. Just wondering :)

Mine will still be using motor mounts and will be a bit more race oriented, but still primarily a weekend cruise-in car. I, for one, definitely prefer a dual purpose street/bruiser car rather than a track-only car, so you have much appreciation from me!!!

Windsor,

I feel like I know you even though it has been on the website and I appreciate your comments. Yesterday I did a search to see if my memory was correct with respect to last Summer someone was interested in the "mock" block and I thought it was you. You may be past the need at this point but if still interested send me a pm and we'll work something out, I don't need it anymore.

As for the motor mounts, I thought about going the solid route but I only want to do this twice (already did it once and it didn't work) LOL. By using the plate and torque limiter system I will also be putting more stability in the front frame rails which solid mounts would not contribute to. Also, if I did the solid mounts and they didn't cure the problem the only real option left would be the plate/limiter system. Yes, a PITA pulling the engine, fabbing the front plate to accept the accessories etc. but once it is done it is done, period, dot. I've got enough confidence in the engine that I know it will not be a "shake, rattle and roll" type ride on the street so I'm choosing the option that I feel most confident will cure the problem of 675 ft. lbs. of torque once and for all.

I'll be posting up some pics real soon. Let me know if you need the "block".

Very cool, Hal. Hey, if you're willing to put in the work for the motor plate, they are a great way to secure the engine in these small cars.

I'll shoot you a PM on the mock block!
