Hi all, im new :)
been lurking around here for a bit soaking up the goodies, and now i have a good list of questions.
Having been off in mercedes/volkswagen diesel land for the last few years, i thought it high time to have a truck again. previously a C2500 driver, i wanted a ford this time. So the benz went away and now i am proud owner of an 86 f250.
this truck got expensive FAST! a carb rebuild turned into a motor rebuild. so out comes the 460, off to the machine shop, and today its back in my garage. what came back was not exactly what i asked for, and id like your input here.
first, i wanted the block painted black- it came back grey. ill try to live with it :)
is there any way to verify compression ratio with the heads on? i asked for the block to be zero decked, but id like to be sure...
based on a mad porter post, i gave the builder some numbers for the cam. it came back with a melling mtf-3 in it ( 204/214 @ .050, .486 .512 valve lift). is this appropriate? i installed a performer intake on the motor, using the stock holley 600 cfm for now. I did not get a spec sheet when i picked up the engine, so assuming here a .030 over bore and standard dish pistons. i was promised a build spec sheet monday, so i might be able to elaborate later
i asked for a 0 degree timing set- do i need to take this into account anywhere else? when installing the distributor, for instance?
i asked for the heads to be ported, but it doesnt look like they touched the exhaust ports at all. i am tempted to stuff the holes with rag and clean them up myself. am i asking for trouble grinding on these installed?
strangely, my exhaust manifolds' bolt holes do not line up AT ALL anymore. i know the engine got hot before i got it- but do manifolds warp that bad? so im shopping for headers- reading the ARB website, it appears that since this truck is not catalyst and did not come with AIR injection manifolds, i can put any header i like on it. ...i think...
(edit: i forgot to tell you, this is a kalifornia truck)
i know thats a big post from a newbie. but that motor is out in the garage right now CALLING MY NAME! i cant sleep till its done! dont feel like you have to answer all my questions at once, and i of course appreciate any wisdom you can throw down :)
