mustang road race setups?

Anyone have a link or two to people using a 460 in fox with a road race setup? I recently acquired a new project, and I'm trying to decide how I want to go with the motor. Car is an 85.5 SVO, but in its most recent incarnation it was powered by a SBF. I have all the original motor/interior, but the car is long way gone from stock. Most of the original stuff that would add to the value as an SVO is either in poor shape or very difficult to get reinstalled do to the mods done previously. I'm looking for a fun driver that doesn't suck turning, and although I like the idea of the 2.3t (it is an SVO), I'm considering another SBF or possibly the BBF. How horrible is the weight distribution with a cast block 460 in there? Thoughts?

And sorry about the post in the buildup forum. I'll make this the start of my buildup thread by posting the pic of when I took the car off the trailer.

Car is rather filthy. It has been in storage for 4+ years. I've been following this car for 11 years, and it has been through many changes in that time.

look up 83-88tbirdguy I think is his name. Go to car buildups, and look for "in car videos" he has a fox mustang auto cross car that he road races I believe. He could probably be of some real advice. Cheers:D

Check out stang net,
There is a guy if I remember that sells road-race suspensions for Mustangs. He hangs there. There maybe a link. Just and you will surely receive over there.
Regards.

Go here, but read alot before you ask a question. Search search search!!! They don't take lightly to questions about subjects that have already been covered. But, as far as mustang suspension and chassis stuff, if it's out there, they've used it, raced it, broke it, and wrote about it.

I own a record holding-race winning SVO. Ran in the S.F. Region SCCA (roadrace & soloII) in the early 90's. Sit's behind the shop now. I still have the 2.3 in it. As you may know, the front setup on that car is unique. Most of the fox stuff won't fit. If you change the front K member, then all the fox susp. will fit. My car would out corner most anything on the street back then. A 460 powerplant would be great for power but would make it a mustang, not an svo. Tres...

This is exactly what I have been thinking. I fell in love with the car when it was powered by the 2.3. The car ran great when we first built the 2.3 for the PO's son. After the son grew tired of it, they wanted us to switch it to the 347 so they could go racing. I was a bit heartbroken but made sure I kept track of all the original pieces as they came out of the car. The only reason I am entertaining other engines is the fact that it has had solid mounts for the 302 block welded in, suspension mods, and cage running all over the place. I can't reinstall the original seats or dash pieces without cutting the cage out. It has cobra brakes and a selection of Kenny Brown pieces underneath so it is hard to say exactly how much is still SVO under there. If it was removed, I do have it in storage.

The first thing I need to address regardless of the engine choice is the trunk floor. The entire spare well was removed to fit the fuel cell. That isn't so bad, but they did neglect to replace the removed trunk portion not filled with fuel cell with flat sheetmetal. There is just a hole where the fuel cell doesn't sit. Anyway...

I washed the car the other day. You can see the Kenny Brown panhard rod in this particular pic.

The following pic shows the current state of the engine compartment and part of the cage.

I have a medium canyon red metallic 85 SVO. I have been also debating whether to put in a 460 or 5.0. I narrowed it down to a blown PRO CHARGED 460. I am also tettering on a S400 turbo . I would like to do Pro Touring with a 6 sp tranny behind a blown/turboed 460. Most likely it will end up being a AOD/C6. I would love to run BULLRUN or PINKS ALL OUT.... Still in the planning stages.

Use an svo aluminum block and heads for 600 cubes with the 6 speed idea and call it a SVO Road/Dragpack someone might buy it . :p

Leave the 2.3 and put a big snail on it or cut the firewall, build an aluminum 460 and put the driver seat back by the axle. 53% front weight bias is too much and 55% rear bias is not enough - for road racing. Alternatively, make a drag car out of it - you can stand more front bias with a drag car.

I'm going the road racing/auto-x route with my notch. I'm running a completely gutted interior, gutted doors, gutted rear glass, gutted everything. I'm going to run the radiator in the trunk and a bunch of other crazy stuff that your regular Mustang enthusiast would cringe at.
The biggest issue I've run into is figuring out what transmission to run. I thought about beefing up the c6 I have but I just don't want to run a auto (no fun). The manual route is going to be expensive no matter if you go with a toploader or a 6-speed. The manual cost has been the biggest problem so far. I'm still not sure which way I'm going to go.
Its your car don't let anyone talk you out of building it how you want. With the rights tweaks there is no reason you cant build a fun corner ripper.
Best of luck!
Eric
