I'm new to this forum.... but have already learned quite a bit just by reading all the various postings from you guys. Isnt the internet a wonderful thing?

Anyways, I have a '58 Thunderbird being delivered to me next week. It is my first "hot rod".

I am told (by the seller) that it has a 460 from an old '73 Mercury Marquis with 70K miles.. He rebuilt it with new bearings, rings, etc. Said it didnt need to be bored, so they didnt do that. He added alot of new parts to it (fuel pump, water pump, ignition system, etc, etc, all the utilitarian items). He also added a Holley 750 carb (unsure on the exact model), Edelbrock intake (also unsure on the exact model). It's bolted up to a "C6" transmission, and a 9 inch rear end w/ 4.11 gears. No headers. Stock exhaust manifolds with dual exhaust exiting through some Cherry Bombs.

I'll be curious to see what heads it has on it. I'm afraid they may be the first generation of duds, but we'll have to wait and see.

Here's some pics of the car:

and under the hood: (it looks very clean and nicely assembled, I think)

Will I be able to see the casting number on the heads without taking anything apart? Where do I look for this number?

Here's some more pics of the car.... As some of you might notice, the rear fenders have been opened up/modified. Some T-bird purists wont like that, but I think it looks good with the larger rear tires.

I forgot to mention that the motor also has "a slightly larger cam; nothing too wild, just a bit bigger" according to the seller.

how difficult will it be to fit headers on this car, and where's a good place to get some?

(I know thats not an easy question to answer when you arent looking into the engine bay...)

It needs purple fuzzy dice, otherwise it is not a proper pimpmobile. I like it.

I've found some other discussions on this site, and I believe I have found some "shorty" headers from fordpowertrain.com that will work.

thanks

Cool car - seems smaller than I remember them. It also looks like there is a lot of room between the engine and firewall. I hope you post more pics when you take delivery.

As far as the purple distributor cap goes..... it's an Accel "Street Billet" unit.....painted to match!

And there is lots of room between the engine and the firewall because the ductwork for the heating system is all removed!

Who needs heat anyways. This car wont see any Wisconsin winter driving.

The story is that at one time in this car's past, it was destined to be a drag car (which might explain why the ductwork is gone), then was sold to the guy I bought it from. He did most of the work on it, over the span of about the last 10 years.

And yes, the car IS small. It doesnt take any more space in my garage than my GMC Sonoma Extended-cab. It just looks "stretched out".
