Cage Certification ????

I have an S&W Mild Steel 10 point cage in my 94 Mustang and would like to get it certified. My car should run in the low 9's on motor. What is the best cert. I could hope for. A 8.50 would be just fine for me. Will I have to install bars along the rocker and 1/2" x 6" tubes to brace the main hoop to the halo and the halo to the front down bars to get there? Or will a standard no frills 10pt do the trick? Any input welcome. Below is links to engine build and some pics of car.

Thanks,
Gary

A 10 pt should certify to 8.50

I think your right... I would have to look it up in the rulebook. Do you run primarily IHRA or NHRA tracks?

Cale -
I run IHRA track. Maryland International Raceway is what I have local but would like to be able to run NHRA too.

Thanks..... I have the Rulebook ( downloaded it from the web ) . If anyone needs to download it or wants to look through it go to:

So Cale you are saying that what is layed out in the rule book on roll cages is or should be the minimum needed to certify to 8.50 ? If so then I should be good. Still would like to get a couple more bars welded in tho. I'm all about safety.....

The rulebook on NHRA and IHRA in the 8.50 range is pretty much identical... You should be fine. A little extra protection never hurt anyone... ;)

I installed the cage in my coupe. It was a chassis egineering 1 5/8 10 pt kit.Had it certified by local nhra inspector and passed with flying colors. He told me that the min. is 10pt 1 5/8 to cert.Oh yeah it has to be at least .118 thick.Mine was like 124 wall tubing but we found places that was 120.I think the slowest cert is 8.50

Tony-
did you have the bar that runs along the rocker panel? If I am reeading the rules right the only time you need it on an 8.50 chassis is if the stock flooring has been removed or frame is inside of the drivers seat, the roll cage must incorporate a rocker or sill bar to tie the front and rear of the roll cage together.

Now I have a backhalf car so with taking out the old rear floor and adding new would not fall in that would it? Also I have a subframe that comes up through the floor right under the seat and ties in to the front. I will try and get a pic If I can get to it in the trailer.

You know in sted of worrying about it I will just go ahead and try to get it welded in. The only problem is the guy that welded the cage in didn't leave alot of room to weld the bar in at the front attach point.

Tech inspector told me it did not have to have the sill bar if the floor has not been altered in front of the wheel tubs.I put them in my car but did not have to.i figured that it would stiffen the chassis more is why i put them in.When my other car was backhalved it didnt have them either and certified.

Ok. Thanks. I will probably go ahead and put them in. If nothing else to stiffen the chassis.

Thanks 2 All,

If you ever plan on going faster you might think about stepping up to SFI specs vs what's in the NHRA/IHRA books. Plus with the SFI mild steel specs you get to use a mix of both .118" wall & .108" wall tubing.

That is a good point, but right now I'm doing good to afford what I got. LOL. I think if I ever do decide to go faster then I will get rid of the backhalf car and go with a tube chassis.

Gary,
Man you don't have to go far to get to Royce Millers track.

And it being one of the best tracks in the country is real nice for you too.

Yea. I live about 2 miles " as the crow flies " from the track which works out to about 5 miles driving. It really is a nice track. Royce has done alot to the track over the past few years. It is a great place to race, between Royce and his crew you couldn't find a bunch of nicer people.
