Moroso 74102 switch

I don't usually buy moroso stuff but I bought this 74102 on/off switch because it has the 4 terminal set up for an alternator and it says they handle 300amps continuous. I'm now going on my third switch over a years time. works for a while then quits charging. the alt side of the switch burns out and it's time for a new one. I use the MSD 5111 160amp alternator. this sure hasn't helped my dislike of moroso stuff...

any ideas? are there any other switches you guys would recommend? just sick of buying switches and needing to have a spare in the trailer.

thanks
Dave

I run the alternator wire directly to the battery and bypass the main switch. When the switch is turned off it will not allow feed back from the alternator. I use a Flaming River switch and it works great, I also run the one wire from the alt. through a 150 amp manual reset circuit breaker that I turn off when charging the battery to prevent feed back and heating up the alt. when the charger is on.

My alternator wire is straight to the battery. I run one of the Ultra Mini 50 amp alternators and the current is "dirty". The battery acts as filter.

The Moroso switch you bought won't last with much of an alternator. The main switch is heavy enough, but the two small alternator posts are only good for 20 amps. That's why it burns up.

Take a look at Cole-Hersee part # 75912. Page 35 here:

It can handle it.

You can get it at O'Rielly's or most parts stores that carry truck parts. It's in their "Fleet" catalog.

I've been running that same switch for 8 years, no problems. Which wire from the alternator are you running through the little terminals on the switch? My alternator is wired straight to the battery through the large terminal. The small terminal is used for the field wire (? I think thats what its called) so that the alternator doesn't back feed the ignition and keep mrunning when the switch is turned off.

thanks guys, I see the error of my ways. the problem still stands and the reason I bought this double pole switch is (with the alt wire hooked to the battery) an on/off switch will not shut the car down.

unfortunately this msd alt is a one wire giving no option on other wires to hook through the small terminals.

this moroso switch has cole hersee engraved in it...

I'm gonna go F# with it and see what can be done

not sure how long it's been since the last post but by my time it's been 3/4 of a beer. thanks guys for getting the light bulb to flicker, go out, flicker again and it's back to the normal dim :P

went to the car and looked it over, new switch in hand. thought, oh #$%&!!! if you put the alt cable to the bat it should quit charging and shut the car off (see numerous posts above). previously had it on the opposite side of the switch...

before taking the bad switch out, moved the alt wire from small terminal to the bat side of switch and how about that, it shut off!! so I take back a couple of the bad things I said about moroso :) to David, Doug, gt, thanks a lot guys!!

rarely do I need to charge the batterys. got two 1000ca's for weight and when the alt works the charger stays in the trailer. I do like the filter idea though.
