JSracing 08-16-2009, 03:28 PM Cale said this is a section for pics and stuff on hardcore builds. Not sure how hardcore it is, but I like this section. Been needing a race only section in here.
anyway, this is what I did today. suprising what a little paint will do for aluminum. the black anodizing had worn down and I kind of like the look of plain aluminum. Now I am just waiting on the billet aluminum band clamp from JR @ RBS superchargers.
You are looking @ a Mike Dunn 10 in. offset drive ( belt drive ) for a BBF of course, I like the belt drive inside its dry and looks very similar to the danny bee in principle. it locates the mag in front of the Drivers side head. Reason is for Blower clearance.
No need for a Mag 44 in what I run, I can have this one upgraded to a mag 20 for 300 bucks, the MSD 44 is $2500.00 ( the 12 is $1800 and the box you see is another $400.00 ) and even MSD says it isnt needed unless you run nitro and even then it is only for extreme. Interestingly a mag 12 weighs about the same as a 44 .... 10 lbs. I will probably make a support bracket to go to a bolt under the mag. Ordinarily I'd wait until the whole thing was done and post pics but the engine is at the machine shop getting 1/4 " milled off the back of the danny bee and I got bored not being able to mess with something in the shop. this was all i had to fool with :)

Cale Aronson 08-16-2009, 05:14 PM It is honestly amazing how much you can inprove the looks of parts, simply by taking them off, cleaning them up and giving them a paint job! I have a list of different paints that are "rattle can" paints that I use regularly for those type jobs. I have found that if you use a good Laquer Thinner on the surface and get it nice and clean, then use an adheisive promoter (rattle can)... before you paint the surface it will hold up quite better. Also, if you are doing it on something that will see some contact with hard or not so soft things against it's surface.... a few coats of clear will help the endurance factor!
Looks pretty good.... Just be sure to clean up the gear drive shaft a little down there at the bottom ;)
Thanks for the post.... pretty cool!
TopSportsman916 08-16-2009, 05:32 PM Nice looking set up Jerry.. You aint half bad with a spray bomb!!! :)
JSracing 08-16-2009, 07:28 PM yeah I couldnt find the masking tape Cale. Will definately clean up the running gear.
Chris I've painted my share of stuff with a rattle can :)
Cale Aronson 08-16-2009, 08:21 PM You wouldn't believe how good things can look with a spray can... it is just like painting with a paint gun and real paint... take your time, prep, and be clean.
Al Martin 08-17-2009, 08:55 AM I have a slogan. If ya cant clean it, paint it!
Chuck Stevens 08-17-2009, 10:31 AM "I will probably make a support bracket to go to a bolt under the mag." That's why there is a "dog leg" in the offset drive that Paul offers. It allows the mag to sit back parallel to the right head. The one I have includes a simple bracket for that purpose.

Chuck,
I like Paul and his products, he is a super guy and has offered this forum and me personally a ton of advice. Especially on blower specifics.
However that part he offers is pretty steep. Not sure what the final price is going to work out to be. Obviously you have to pay for great craftsmanship. I can't say it isnt worth it because it probably is. I like it for the same reason you do, where it locates the Mag.
However, the belt drives run DRY ( I like that, NO Oil leaks to worry over ) and are well proven. Mike has Dunn ( pun intended ) this for most every motor you can stick a blower on and offers great support. This one wasn't nearly as expensive and I got it half the price of a new one.
Mike's new ones are $900 or so and this one was $450.00 from a fellow Ford guy on Inside top alky .com
JR @ RBS superchargers has the belts in stock and it really isnt much different than running a Danny Bee.
All that being said I plan to switch it to a cam drive after next year anyway and plug the hole. If this was permanent, I'd invest in the one Paul makes.. and I always have that option later right? lets hope so.
that was my reasoning for getting this one, trust me I talked ot Paul alot about his, I love his mag drive.
question: the one you have has a bracket for that purpose? I didnt understand what you meant there Chuck. You have one? A Paul Kane one or a Mike Dunn one or?
Frank Kramer 08-17-2009, 02:44 PM Is the bronze gear only double pinned or does it also have a woodruff key???
Are you also going to run a crank trigger with it???
I changed from Mallory's to Promag 44's on three of our engines this year and those promag's are absolutly working great.
Frank

We will double pin it, no woodruff key, but then again I am not turning the oil pump with it. External dry sump.
A Woodruff key would be nice though.
yes I will be running a crank trigger. JR @ RBS made me a degree ring with the magnets embedded in it and it is pressed on the blower hub. I also have the pick up from him and it all fits the Crank support bracket. None of the crank trigger stuff is MSD. I will have to adapt the mag pick up to the MSD stuff.
Chuck Stevens 08-18-2009, 10:35 AM The offset drive I have is one of Billy's, an early billet one.
Paul Kane 08-18-2009, 02:50 PM Wow, Jerry, that looks really clean. The Mike Dunn stuff is nice. Keep a spare gilmer belt, the Pro Mags have a lot of load to them.
I don't think that Chuck Stevens was criticizing your drive my suggesting the application of a support bracket. Fabricating a bracket is common practice with offset mags that hang way out in front of the engine...and yours looks pretty damn long. Even our drive comes with a 5/16-18 female thread already in the mag drive body specifically for the purposes of fabicating a bracket for support. In our case, the drive is dropped into the block, then rotated counter-clockwise to the front the cyliner head. Once there, the end user can evaluate the 5/16-18 hole location relative to the accessory bolt holes on the end of his cylinder head, and fab up a bracket that secures our drive to his cylinder heads. So the mag drive "becomes one" with the engine, just like an intake manifold, etc. Timing adjustments are then made simply by loosening the magneto's securing clamp and rotating the magneto.
You got that drive at an outstanding price; if it breaks due to lack of support you just might have to pay retail for a brand new one. :o Make a bracket, it's standard practice :)

Paul, I think we have a misunderstanding somewhere. this one I bought actually came with a bracket someone fabricated out of aluminum bar stock as a support. My question to chuck was what type he had... but I agree with you 100% and I will trade you this one even for one of yours my friend ;)
Paul Kane 08-18-2009, 10:48 PM Oops, my bad. I just re-read the thread. I didn't see that you already had a bracket, I thought you were inquiring why one would be needed.
TTYL,
Paul
