Fuel delivery-filter

Does someone have a good links on what mic filter and where to place them in the system?
I ran a Earls -8 filter before the pump and caused me all kinds of trouble.

I have a 1971 maverick. The gas tank is toast and I want to change it. Now, on top of the tank there is a vent cap. Some of these come drilled and some are plugged. I assume the plugged ones run a vented gas cap. How do I tell the difference from a vented cap or not? Should all gas tanks run this vent on top?

Thanks

Tom,
I believe you want a vented cap. I also have a plug on the 67 Ranchero tank. I used it for my fuel return when I installed the Mustang 5.0 SFI. The 64 Falcon also uses a vented cap. My 68 uses a vented cap. Not until I get to my 70 Cyclone do I have a non vented cap and it is low below the bumper behind the license plate. There is a 1/4" loop line in the trunk to vent the tank, it exits outside through the trunk. My vented caps have a check valve on them.
On the 5.0 install I have a normal 3/8 steel fuel filter before the pump and then the stock Mustang 5.0 filter between the pump and engine. Has worked for 150,000 miles.
