What interchanges with other 70's (can the axle gears be swapped for another spline)? Good points and bad? Parts for this thing available?

The 23 sline dana 70's were used in the early 70's and are different than the later ones. The change was around 77 IIRC. The 23 spline axles use a different carrier and gears because the offset is different. It has a 1/2" offset and the 35 spline 70's have a 5/8" offset.

I am thinking you are talking pinion offset, correct? If so, then I would have to have the early housing. Are gears any harder to find? All I have is the locker. My truck ('68) has a dual wheel 60.

The early housings were also 6 bolt stud on the wheels in the mid 60's too. (1966 and older not sure when they started) IDK if you can swap to an 8 hole hub, or if you dont care. Keep in mind one side is left hand thread if you find one.

Parts are definitly not as popular as with the 60.
A Sterling swap may be worth investigating...

Crap! Been searching '70s some and it seems to me to be too much trouble. I think I will sell it and get one for the 60 that's in it now.

You may check with Tractech, who made the Detroit Locker, side gear inserts may available for 35 spline for the 70. They are changeable on the Dana 60's. Strengthwise no difference between 60 and 70, just more parts avaible for the 60.

As stated, those are oddball axles for sure. I had one that I bought out of a 2wd F350 without knowing the deal. I also had an M715 Kaiser, which coincidentally, has the same 23spl deal. Many of those trucks came with Detroits, so if you find an M715 board, you can likely get parts for the Dana 70. Guys let them go cheap because they upgrade to the 35spl axles. I bought a locker from an M715 guy for my Dana 70, I believe that's the only interchange you'll find.

I have decide to sell it. So what do you think the thing would sell for? I realize that it isn't popular so the price couldn't be much.
