cheap traction?

This is a gearhead question so I guess it's in the right forum.

What's the most cost effective way to get traction to both rear wheels on my '72 T-bird ? I'm staying with the stock wheels and the biggest tires that fit on them. (not very big!)
the suspension has been completely rebuilt ,and the ride height is about 2-3 inch higher all around
With the new engine I know when I stomp on it it's just gonna spin,
I'm a semi -retired LOL Machinist and I'm not afraid of working on the rear end:)

maybe a good aftermarket limited slip.i assume it's a 9" so you'll be able to get whatever you want for it.

I wouldn't buy anything till it was for sure a 9 inch. You will need to know what spline count you have too.

Do I want limited slip or do I want a "Locker
I remember "Back in the Day" ...with a posi-trac sometimes it would just transfer the slipping from side to side ..kind of jerking ..untill the car finally took off.
I really want both wheels to push at the same time ...if I can Afford it !

I personally use a stock rebuilt Ford traction lock. But, it seems as though not many are done correctly. They have to be shimmed correctly during the rebuild. There are locker type units that install in your open style differential that are more positive acting and not as expensive as a complete locker.

P.S. I don't know if I want to spend $500 just to burn rubber on both wheels ...although in High School it was COOOOL!

is a good way. If it is gone, look at the upper right side of the diff for a web that curves down. If the webs are straight then you have a 9 inch, curved is a 9 3/8.

the cheapest route would be to weld it, can't get much cheaper than free!

I have ran these in the past but the problem I had with them was the steel roll pins would break in half after a while. The good thing was they would send you new ones up when you called them

If you drive it on the street, be prepared to break axles if you weld it or spool it.

****! lol

I ran a BBF truck, Lifted on 38s with a 9" rear with a mini spool. 30.00 locker. Never busted a shaft wheelin or on the street. A good 9" is pretty tough! Mine was a stock 31 spline. A car should be 28 spline but with car tires he will be just fine.

X2, it has nothing to do with the 9 inch carrier, it's the axles.
If it doesn't slip when you turn on the street it puts tremendous pressure on the axles. Plus turning on the street is just plain hard to do without it pushing the frontend. In a 72 bird I would just go with a tractionlock. Better yet just buy drag radials.

What I meant to say is that if it's got any BALLS, it'll break axles! 31 spline, that's for Quakers!

I went with a Summit mini spool in my 28 spline 9" axle. Best 60' was a 1.80 at 8.80 in the 1/8 on drag radials at 4,656lbs with me in it. I think I spent less than $40.00 for everything in the axle.
