I have a chance to pick up a dana 44hd at a fair price. My question is can I move all the internalts etc to my spring hung 44? Is the housing the same. The 44hd is leaf spring hung. Mine is coil spring hung. The 44hd has a locker and a couple sers of gears. Thanks

If you want it for 8-lug, change from the knuckle out , might as well install new balljoints when you have it down that far if there any ?. But to make it short- 44hd is not very HD. larger brakes and thicker axle tube's. R & P interchange, stub shafts, and lockouts. The inner axle shafts on both side's are differant lenght [longer].Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, Thats what I needed to know.. It was a fair deal for the 44hd. Came with a locker and a couple of gear sets. But, if I cannt change it over to my coil spring 44 I think Ill hold out for a Dana 60 and change it over.. Thanks again..

Most of the 44hd's were low pinion and had a standard rotation gear set, the coil sprung 44 is a high pinion, reverse rotation gear set, which means that they used different ring and pinions, other than that, all of the rest of the internals (i.e. carrier and axle shafts) will interchange. As was mentioned before, if it's to get the 8 lug outters and bigger brakes, just change from the knuckle out and be done with it.

The HD44s from 78-79 were high pinion.
