How to launch?

I posted some time for my last race truck and got a couple comments that it was slow in first half of track for my mph in quarter, I thought the same thing but wasnt sure.

60' 1.688
330' 4.923
1/8 7.654
mph 89.53
1000' 10.041
Quarter 12.082
mph 109.76

I built my engine for mid range so it really surprised my at the poor performance on the low end. This was in an 86 ranger 3800 stall 4.11 gears 2700 w/o driver 28x10.5x15 m/t et drags. I am in the middle of build ing another truck at this time but was wondering if I should be leaving on the convertor or below the stall speed, and if that would help leaving at a little lower rpm or not? I am sending the converter to be raised to a 4500 stall in the off season and contemplating going to 4.30 gears also as the next motor will spin a little higher to 6500 rpm's?

Could you tell a little more about the engine? also what kind of trans? what rpms are you shifting at and going through the beams at?
Just kind of curious

Your times are very similar to mine.

yours mine

60' 1.688__ __60' 1.72
330' 4.923___ 330' 4.94
1/8 7.654____ 1/8 7.653
mph 89.53___ mph 90.02
1000' 10.041__1000' 10.012
Quarter 12.082__ Quarter 12.019
mph 109.76___mph 112.55

My car pulls hard from the beginning but dies at the very end, and yet look at the remarkable similarity in times. I think 12.0 at only 109 mph is excellent. I think we need to race each other!:)

That would have been a good race but engine is in my 2000 now and has headers on it now times would probably be better.

As for the engine it is 71 block 30 over 9.6:1 compression comp 294S Wiend Stealth intake 950 carb MSD 8580 , tranny is Race prepped C-6 manual v/b 3800 stall all red alto clutches.

I am building a 502 at tax time which I hope will be about 650 hp and sending the converter to be raised to 4500 stall speed.
I was leaving the line at 3800 to get the times I was achieving really wondering if I was doing it right?

If you leave from idle it will stall a bit more and hit harder and go quicker IF you maintain traction.

I always wondered if I was doing it the right way. I footbrake it. I knew the transbrake guys leave pretty hard on converter but very few footbrake so not many to ask about it at my track. Thank you for the advice.

With good traction, you can 'flash' the convertor, and it'll hit harder.

What I do when Im footbraking....hold the throttle so the RPM's are at 2000 ( I have a 4500 stall conv.) and just nail it on the last yellow!! It actually grabs at about 4800 and just boogies down the track!!

The thing would have pulled the front tires for sure with that method it was close as it was. lol . I think my times would probably be a little quicker the way you guys are talking about.
