I am going to be putting about a 500 -550 hp 460 in the 1984 mustang with a set of frame connectors installed and welding up the torq boxes. I was wandering if I needed to install a cage in the car? If so will a 6 point be enough? It will see some drag racing with 10" slicks and 2,500 stall, but mainly just street driving on the weekend.

Good question! Use the NHRA or IHRA rule books as you guide. I have a 408 Capri that runs 10.60s @ 130 with an 8 point cage, remember more bars help the Fox not to twist so much. If you are going to keep on building that thing(and who does'nt) maybe save yourself some chassis shop labor charges and have more cage installed than less cage! IMHO Good luck and race safe!! Dale

With an unaltered floorpan and firewall you can run as fast as 10.00 with a 8pt Rollbar. A full Cage will be needed at 9.99 or faster. Because my car also is primarily a street car, I only run a 6pt rollbar in my car. I plan to upgrade it to 8pt by adding a couple kicker bars off the main hoop in the future to avoid issues during tech inspection. I really don't want to run any faster than 10.00 anyway. By the time you put a full cage in and make the other changes necessary to run faster than 10.0, it doesn't make a very good "street car". My car is still fast enough to make a pass down the 1/4 mile "interesting" and yet is streetable enough that you can drive it almost anytime and anywhere. The looks and sounds of the BB under the hood attracts attention wherever you go! Fuel economy isn't that great, so that becomes the limiting factor on how much it's driven.

Never "SKIMP" on your cage. Safety is the most important thing!

It sure is, but if it is primarily a street car (2500 stall) I don't think having all that extra pipe in there makes it safer while on the street. You don't ride around with a helmet on, so all that extra pipe is just something to hit your head on.

I don't have problems hitting my head, I'm "VERTICALLY CHALLENGED"!
