car 87 gt mustang, weight 3050 with me in it.
this car is used for racing only i run it on 110 octane.
my car run's 10.70 on motor and seems to always be the same at 10.32 on nitrous.i think i'm up at the rev limiter way before finishing the quater mile,i have it set at 6200 rpm.i just don't know if i should raise my limiter to 6800,i don't know if the motor will hold with all the antique part's i have inside it,there good parts and the motor was built by a professional race shop, but still this motor does have it's limit's due to stock crank and rods.
i'm looking forward to hearing everyone chime in on this,i'm new to racing and i have a nice set up to start with but looking not to blow it up but also looking to push it hard without killing it.
i don't know for sure what the proper psi rating should be set at for my air pump, i think it's on the low side 6psi.at 3500 rpm,i'm looking for good advice on what psi to set it at. my rev limiter is set at 6200 but i'm wondering if 6800 is a safe rpm? i am using 125 shot of nitrous from start to finish, and i want to go as high as 200 shot?is this a good or bad idea.write me back.
cheatham 11-11-2009, 07:17 AM 6500 is bout as high as I would want to go. Hyd. cams start giving up around 6000-6200 area, Then the safe zone on the stock rods is around 6500
ky mustang 11-11-2009, 11:35 AM You think you are on the rev limiter or know you are ?
FourEyed Freak 11-11-2009, 12:39 PM 6800 RPM occassionally should not be an issue as long as your N2O tuneup is good. I say change your chip to 6800 RPM and run it out the back door.
460VEGA 11-11-2009, 01:29 PM You are prob. not hitting 6500 with that hyd cam, put a good solid in there & it will wake up that motor.
street/strip466mustang 11-11-2009, 06:10 PM you guy's are great thank you for all the advice,my rev limiter is set at 6200,and yes i am up against the rev limiteri'd say about 100 feet before i end, at the quater so at 1220 i'm tapped.i have a really small tire true 28x10.5 mickey thompson on a 12 in rim, the tire is so stretched it's actually only 27 in.tall also 4:11 gear and only 2 speed.if i don't over rev the motor past 6500,what would i have to do maby go with a 29 or 30 in tall tire or maby a gear change 1 gear lower 3:90?i don't know but my nitrous tune was set up by steve jonson induction solutions, and i use his flow guage so yeah no problem with using nitrous i want to go bigger but i think my tire and gear ratio are limiting me?write me back.
richter69 11-11-2009, 08:01 PM The rods would scare me more than anything, other than that the limiting rpm factor is the cam and spring package.
cool40 11-11-2009, 09:14 PM whats your mph on the bottle vs. off? your converter could be holding you back some if it's not for spray. a good converter is key when you make good power & add spray to the mix. i've got issues with my own junk, been swapen converters& gears around,i just went from 4.86 gear to 4.30 and didnt change et or mph.all the power in the world aint worth much if it's not goen to the rear wheels! good luck
Dukeofdiamonds 11-11-2009, 09:50 PM The rods would scare me more than anything, other than that the limiting rpm factor is the cam and spring package.
X2. I would be very afraid of those rods failing if you up your engine speed much more.
street/strip466mustang 11-12-2009, 01:52 AM is 6500 max level were i'm still safe?listening to all the good advice i know now that i'm not setting my rev limiter at 6800.i think 6500 is going to be the max limit for the motor and my nitrous rev limit will be at 6400.i know you don't want to be up at the limiter with the nitrous so my nitrous alway's shut's off before it limit's out.also when i leave the line my nitrous is'nt activated till after i release the tran's brake.all the nitrous wiring and stuff is all good and safe,i'm worried about my internals.even though i'm using these old rods and crank, there pretty beefy and strong i'm really impressed with my combo it just feel's like it want's to go alot more.i just have to figure out how to bring it out safely.my converter was made also by jw enginereing they made a 10 in.converter just for my combo so it's built just for this motor combo and car.it flash stalls at 5000 rpm which is perfect, i leave the line off the converter.my trans and converter were made for this. i have the two step hooked up, but it won't rev over 5000 off the line and that is where my 2 step is set at so i don't even really need it but it's there anyway.my trap speed with nitrous is 10.32@129 on motor 10.784@121.93.write me back
blueblood 11-12-2009, 05:44 AM with regards RPM with factory rods, 7,000/7500 RPM is achievable with fully prepped H/P factory rods, hydraulic cams can run easily up to this RPM range . horsepower/tourqe level just depends on how much you want to spend and what you are building the motor for
street/strip466mustang 11-12-2009, 11:44 AM i'm mainly using this car just for racing.i forgot to add that the times i left were 10.78@121 was my best et on motor with transbrake and 10.32@129 with nitrous footbrake only.i hav'nt even tested this motor yet with the nitrous and transbrake i'm sure it might go 10.00 flat.i want to test this thing the smart way by doing it patiently.i don't have much seat time in this car and i have to get it tuned right before i really open her up.i have some more questions.i am running an areospace air pump i have it set at 6psi.at 3500 rpm.does anybody know what the correct pressue should be set at wide open say 6500 rpm what vaccum psi should i be pulling?also my timing is set at 36 degrees full advance at 3500 rpm is this a good start or should i change it.write me back
CarsByCarl 11-12-2009, 12:18 PM You're definitely in the outer limits of where I like to see stock rods, but 6500 is certainly tollorable and less stressfull than running against the rev limiter at 6200.
Sounds like it might be time for a solid flat tappet and better rods.

x-2 your driving a grenade, get rid of the stock rods, cobrajet or not.
Dr's Wife Racing 11-21-2009, 08:59 PM I found that limit- I had the shifter on 6600 and the magic smoke came out . It ran quite a while that way though' with a very heavy TRW dome piston. Ward
street/strip466mustang 11-21-2009, 11:39 PM i've been runing the car at 6200 max rpm.i was hoping to raise it to 6500.so you think i'm pushing it a bit at that rpm, with these cobra jet rod's?
ok i'm making an list of thing's to improve on this motor over the winter rod upgrade and maby also have the three center main's upgraded to the 4 bolt splayed cap's and then have them line honed.i am running a main girdle it's 1 inch thick steel.
question what rod's to get please everyone chime in.I need advice on the rod upgrade also which 4 bolt main cap's should i use also.write me back.
richter69 11-21-2009, 11:45 PM any h beam, scat, eagle etc, even cat.........just get um checked.
Same with the caps, even cat is cheap and ok.
street/strip466mustang 11-23-2009, 05:46 PM i think i am considering going with aluminum rod's.their lighter and i do want to spray my motor next year hopefully up to a 300 shot of nitrous.so i know i need rod upgrade,4 bolt main cap.what does a set of good aluminum rods go for?
