do some reading on www.pirate4x4.com (http://www.pirate4x4.com). Put on your suit of armor before you post because they dont take kindly to newbs.

9" front axles are quite common in the rock crawling scene but most use D60 components. IMO its not worth building one out of a D44 unless youve got a really light truck in which case Id just run the D44. Regardless of how strong you make the inners (35 40sp or whatever) you are still stuck with the 19sp outers - I dont think anyone is making beefier 44 stubs and if they do you are going to need new spindles. You are also limited in ujoint size by the inner C and knuckles.
What Im getting at is the cost of building a 44/9 hybrid does not outweigh the end result. A 60/9 would be the way to go if you are trying to cut weight but still need a super strong axle. This makes a very nice axle but its expensive.

Hopefully this helps.

EDIT:
in my rambling I forgot to answer your question...

no, any axle shaft you get will be custom. Also do a search for "hi9" or "609"

Could you make it.....probably. Would it be worth it, probably not. You would have to use the Dana 44 outers for the steering knuckles and shafts and that will be the weak link for sure. The Dana 44 ring and pinion is much stronger than the outers so the extra strength gained from the 9" center is kind of pointless as the real weak link is still there. Also, the 9" pinion enters very low in the housing which will most likely create front driveshaft issues.

In case you were wondering, Currie makes a high pinion 9" front. Very cool but $$$.

I'd say not worth it with 44 components. Even with 60 parts it's expensive and time sonsuming... What are you trying to do that a 44 or 60 won't do for you?

Also, as for low pinion... There is a company called "Hi9" I believe, which makes high pinion 9" center sections with some modified oiling so they live. Not sure how these would work on a front axle application though.

I have built some I used the stock 9" 31 spline 4 spider open cairrior. and dana 44 31 spline axles from moser. If I remember right You can use the 2 long side corp 10 bolt axles out of a GM and have them cut and resplined to 31. You also have to install a inner seal. I used the seal-it brand used for 9'' rears in oval track racing. and yes the dana 44 knuckle assy. Its much stronger and if you use a alum center section it is a lot lighter than a 44
