I am going thru my rear soon and was wondering if there were any mods I could do that would make the Trac Loc more effecient. I have heard of adding clutches to help it "lock up" tighter, but was wondering if it would really help. It works well but I might as well give it the once over while I'm in there. Thanks in advance.

Anything you can do the increase the coefficient of friction between the two axles will help prevent the one wheel peel effect. That being said be careful with adding clutches or increasing the preload on the clutch paks. Especially on the 4 pinion version. The 2 pinion units will handle a bit more preload. They are prone to splitting the carrier around the flange where the ring gear bolts on... oops no drive....:o
New clutch paks and steels, new bearings, use the right friction modifier with your oil.
Never been to fond of the trac lok's myself.. usually have to be rebuilt fairly often to keep them working.. I think the auburn style work better longer. Best option for the street is the locker imo... some guys dont like the clunking but it doesnt bother me.:D

Thanks for your reply. After much thinking I may change things a bit. Will inspect it first and go from there. Thanks again.

Add clutch's and change the friction/steel order and they work great. When you get it apart you will see the clutches are installed with several steel plates together. Assemble it alternating clutch/steel.

is this a ford 9 inch trac-lok- if so replace the clutches and steels if needed and set the preload on the plates to get 180-250 ft-lbs rotating torque.you CANNOT add more clutches to a 9 inch trac lok , case halves will not go together---.also polish off the sharp edges on the clutch side (ring gear bolt side) to reduce the chance of any cracks-- works for engines.---set up with the proper preload a trac lok will survive nicely in street driven vehicles with an occasional pass at the track..
if it is for an 8.8 posi as one reply reads -- you can add an extra friction plate to each side by alternating steel plate friction plate steel plate friction plate to give 4 friction plates per side as opposed to the factory 3 plates for an increase in torque capacity however it may make the unit too harsh at corners.

Hey john-9,
Thanks. It is indeed a 9 inch. As stated earlier, it works fine now, but I haven't been in the diff in some time. I figured while I was checking it out, I might as well go thru it. Will find out my next step when apart. Thanks again for the replies.

GREETINGS. JUST SO'S YA NKOW , IF YA GOT ANY FMX AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PARTS LAYIN AROUND , THE FRICTIONS AND STEELS WILL WORK IN THE 9" DIFF.

i've had good luck on the street with a locker, are your axles 28 spline?
