Sorry for the novice questions but here it goes anyway...

Can you turn a 460 2 bolt main block into a 4 bolt main block on the # 2,3 and 4 mains?

yes
use splayed caps, even the cheapies seem to work, but are hard to machine iirc.

Yes, and they will hold up to as much power as you could throw at the cylinder block. There are different 4-bolt cap conversion available depending on which 2-bolt cylinder block you are starting with. Use the search function and read up.

Still doesn't work for me. Maybe I'm still accidentally banned due to someone's douchebaggery.

Well this certainly helps. I'm turning to many RPM with to much power. I'm going to have to do something before I tear things up.... AGAIN!!

Hi guy's I'm new to the Ford family, took apart my marine motor outa my boat due to low compression. figured a hone job and rings and maybe a nice thumper cam will wake this thing up. Anyways upon my removal of the main caps i found #2 cap broken needing some help on why this happend.
Also what would be a good replacement cam to use to keep original valve train.

Also it is a D1ve block with d3 heads.

Ed where are you located? We are in CA and I have blocks for days, and am also a performance boater and can offer engine combo advice. Call or PM.

Isn't it better to install 4 bolt caps to a DOVE-A block? All the D1VE's I've seen have the thinner pan rails and main webs. There just does not look like a lot of meat for the splayed bolts due to the thinner web area.

There are aftermarket caps for both style blocks. Either block works fine.

What kind of HP and or RPM would a guy reccomend to be the limit of a 2 bolt main with ARP studs in a 1978 car block?

depends on how much risk youre willing to take and how good you are at tuning. the factory rods are the weak link... then pistons... upgrade them and the block and crank are fairly safe up to 800 hp... but with a bad enough tune you can blow anything up- even the stock 224hp engine
