I am wondering what is the point or benefit of the dizzy gear lube mod and why is it nessary to do it, as some people say it is not needed and others say it is. And I don't know either way so am after some insight before I do final assembly of engine.

Several guys have asked my about the oil system on my drag only 557. So here goes. My opinion of course, but the mods have worked well for me. Sorry of I get a little simplistic, but someone may have never messed with ANY of this stuff before.
Lifter bore bushings
cam bearings
cam bearing restrictors
drilled main bearings
The lifter bore bushings are something that has to be done at a machine shop. The bushings are bronze. You only have to do the passenger side, so you'll need 8 bushings. The bushings cover up large holes that let oil into the lifters and then up into the valve covers. The bushings can only be used with solid cams. They have a .006-.010 hole in each one that allows just a little oil into the lifter and pushrod. The main oil galley runs down the passenger side and crosses over in the lifter valley via the crossover casting. For the driver's side you only have to put in a single restrictor as all the oil goes through it..

Here is a pic of the oil crossover restrictor, it's the gold anodized aluminum plug in the photo. The passenger side of the crossover still has a regular pipe plug. Remove the drivers side plug and replace with the restrictor:

Here is a pic of what the restrictor looks like out of the engine. This pic is for a Chevy part (just shows a good pic), but it's the very similar minus the O-ring. All the oil that goes to all the drivers side lifters and top end flows through the small hole in the side of the shaft. That's why you don't have to bush the lifter bores on that side.

To restrict the cam bearings first use only Durabond cam bearings. They are made from seamless material and don't have the "jigsaw puzzle" seam like Clevite or FM bearings. The 460 cam bearings are on the small side width wise and there is some debate over whether you should restrict them. I believe you should. I've had nothing but good experience with the restrictors. As added insurance, if you want it. Jon Kasse sells a special set of Durabond cam bearings that are each .080" wider. The set is actually 5 of the same front cam bearing for a 351C, just packaged together. Durabond Cam bearings after two years of use with a high spring pressure solid roler cam and Royal Purple Racing 41 synthetic oil:

To add the restrictors you drill and tap the cam bearing oil hole in each main saddle. It's easy to do and the cast iron tap's easily. A hole is already there, you just have to enlarge it with the proper size drill bit (17/64) and then tap for 5/16 coarse thread. You install a set screw in each hole. #2-#5 have a small hole drilled in the screw/plug that restricts the oil to the cam bearing and FORCES more oil to the crank. The #1 main saddle also get's drilled and tapped, but it gets a screw/plug without a hole. The #1 cam bearing gets fed from the large galley leading to the oil pressure port above the oil filter. By plugging this off you are keeping the #1 main bearing from being over-oiled (#1 main bearing already has a 1/2" oil hole vs the other's 3/8" hole, so it doesn't need any extra oil). The A460 aftermarket blocks come with a plug to do this, but you can buy a 5/16" coarse thread set screw at any parts store. I would buy the crossover restrictor and drilled cam bearing restrictors from a BBF specialist. They will have what you need in stock. Not very much $$ at all for these parts, but they are hard to find elsewhere. They can also sell you the lifter bushings. Engine Systems in GA will have what you need:

A couple of other items. I also drill the oil slot out in the main bearings to match the oil passage in the crank. Easy to do. Very easy if you use a unibit type step drill bit (a regular drill bit wants to grab the side of the slot). Just lay the bearings in the saddle and carefully drill it out and then de-burr the drilled hole with a file or sanding roll/die grinder. A pic of the mains I just pulled from mine on a recent freshen-up after two years of racing. I think they look VERY good for two years in an alky injected engine. Shows the drilled holes:

I also smooth out the oil return holes in the heads and block and the passages to/from the oil filter and pump.
In short, get the bushings done at a machine shop, the rest can be done at home.

i am building a 521 solid roller street/strip application, pump gas looking for hp and tq levels close to 700 mark. this has to be a front sump system also. i am reading your knolegable post but when you say drivers and passenger side are you in the us or australia as pics dont correspond to me can you show me right or left. as the centre valley oil crossover restrictor i think i am mixing this up???. would you say i need to restrict and bush my lifter bores in this power range. and where can i buy this stuff from as i am in australia and not much down under for these engines.

The bushings go in the side that is Opposite the the oil filter. If you are sitting in the seat, it's on your right.
All my restrictors came from Engine Systems. There is a link to their site in my original post. Contact them for the information.
As to you needing them or not..... Everyones' situation is different, but in my case, they have been well worth the little extra money involved.
