I built this motor to run a 8.60 index class I wanted to be able to run 8.40 in a 3150 lb door car all out . The very last race of 05 I ran the new motor and it ran 8.56 @160 mph but the lifters had scuffed in the IDT block and the material had droped onto the piston skirts and into the bore causing the rings not to seat, the combustion chamber was oil filled and detonation occured ,distorting the heads . Over the off season I bushed the lifter bores honed the block again and rebuilt the motor in order to make sure that I had a good tune I decided to dyno the motor ,some specs and numbers
4.625 stroke
4.625 Bore
6.8 rod
IDT block ( now with bushed lifter bores)
C heads CNC by Mr C Evens
Comp Custom .873 289 @.050 828 Ex 308@.050 114 LC
14.5 flat top piston std speed pro 1/16 1/16 3/16 ring package
SVO intake
Crowford Injection with Rons 2100 cfm Body # 1 pump

Superflow 902

I ran the tune up that I had in the motor for the 8.56 run .078 main jet .040 Nozzels 38 deg timing to see what kind of hp it made I thought it would be better but it made 976 hp at 6500 rpm Hp and was rich . After that we made 6 more pulls, time was runing out but the results got better quick I found that the motor like 32 deg of timing and lost power above or below 32 I change Nozzels to .038 and leaned the motor even more with a .084 main jet

Max Test RPM 6700

1,052 hp 6700RPM
Max tq 867 ft lbs @6100 rpm

Fuel pressure was 85 psi at 6700
The motor used 986 CFM on this pull

5500 890 hp 805 tq
6000 988 hp 865 tq
6200 1,021 hp 866 tq
6400 1,043 hp 856 tq
6600 1,051 hp 835 tq
6700 1,052 hp 824 tq

I needed to bring a high side in at about 6400 rpm because the fuel Lbs/hr was telling me that it was getting a little rich but I was happy with the results and I am sure from my past tune up that ran 8.56 that I have picked up more than enough for my needs . I will be testing the car on Feb 18-19 and will see what kind of ET this will provide

Mr. McGuiness,

It sounds like you and Adrian did a nice job with this engine. The 1052 Hp is a good number and I imagine after tuning on it some more, you all will make it even better. Congratulations and go win some races! Thanks for the "business" with the CNC ported C-460 heads!

Sincerely

C Evans Thanks for all your help with the heads and the advice you gave me concering other things on the build along the way , Red McGuiness is my racing name (it's a long story) thanks Adrian

if it wasn't a "pen-name" like Mark Twain or something. You had me confused for sure. But, seeing as how you're a CA kid, maybe you remember hearing the stories about Floyd Lippencott Jr. and the "Freight Train" dual engined dragster???

those "C" heads really crank out the power on a large engine don't they? Wow!

I don't see how you could resist turning the engine on up and seeing what it would do at 72-7800 rpm!! I bet you would have went over 1100. I have a 641" built similar that I hope to make at least 1100. Good luck at the track and let us know how it runs.

Our 598 c-head like to run 25-28 engine would fall on it face above 30.

What type of fuel did you run in yor motors with 28 deg timing???

As for spinning the motor higher I like to build a motor to make alot of Torque and try to keep the rpm down ( thay last longer ) I was a little unsure about how this would work with the large C heads and remember talking to Charlie about keeping the intake cc's down his program was good for the intake cc compaired to the flow #'s . I like to load the motor with the rear gear and work the torque . I am sure with a little different cam and if you put the motor on gas insted of alky you could get 1100 hp

I ran the new 622 at a test and tune on Sat 18 th the car is a 70 Mustang fastback,Alston tube chassie, 4 link 33x16.5 tire 9" converter 4.10 rear gear, Bruno/4 speed liberty alky injection 3150 lb with driver it ran 8.38 @161 mph 7200 rpm trap

Adrian, aka Red McGuiness,

That 8.38 e.t. sounds great. For a 3150 lb. car I'd say you met and exceeded your performance goals. Now how about posting a picture of this '70 Mustang fastback of yours, or just send me some pictures for my "Hall of Fame" wall.

Thanks,

I would dare to say, with those times and trap rpm's you hit the 1100hp mark like David said. Good job
