Hello everyone I have a 1971 429 motor that I am currently installing into my wagon. I know it's not a complete car build up or restore but I have some questions and would like some advice. I have what I think are thunderbird or boss motor mounts. They are the big wide ones that bolt right to the block. And I have bought frame mounts that bolt to the frame. I know I am missing the insulator which I was going to make myself because they are way to expensive for a hunk of metal I can make myself. Anyway I got the engine on the crane last night and lowered it down in my car, which is up on jack stands in my garage. To have my engine down far enough to get the power brake booster on and get the trans to fit as well as the gas pedal z bar to work my block mounts are basically sitting on my frame mounts. My question is how can there be a 4 inch tall insulator???? I'm dumbfounded! So I took the frame mounts off and lowered it in and have it sitting where I want it and it clears everything and I can get the top bolts in the trans. But the frame mounts on the block are about three inches away from the frame!! Does anyone have an pictures of what the mounts all bolted together and in the car look like??? I was going to buy the crites kit but that's 210$!! And it looks like it would make it too tall. My airplanes gonna already be sticking out of the hood. And any pictures of what your 429 looks like in your engine bay, spacing from the firewall and side to side but mostly I just want to see a pic of the engine in a mustang or whatever and see what the mounts look like. That's I appreciate it. Ned d to move past this so I can get going.

Dman64, that snow is crazy deep, I have not seen snow like that ever!!! I like it to cool off a little but snow like that I just don't know, I liked living in the Carolina's it had the same time seasons almost to the week, 12 weeks spring 12 weeks summer 12 weeks fall 12 weeks winter, but the winters were weak no snow at all

When I was a kid we had snow like that then it got to be less and then the last couple years it's been like this. Last year we have a serious flood in high river and calgary when it all melted, I've never seen the rivers and water run like that here, it was the 1 in 100 year flood or so they say.

I was teasing the wife saying if it wasn't for the fact that canadian girls were the best I would move south. Lol.

Stay warm!

Got fuel gauge working, got rid of some unneeded wiring, made clearance on exhaust manifold hitting steering box and shortened my throttle linkage. I also realized that I need to chop my lower control arms and take about an inch out. With the wheels on the ground and lower control arms adjusted all the way in my wheels are still tilted about a 3/4 of a inch in at the top. Don't know what or how it happened but ill make it work!! One more thing checked off my list.

Ok, so I see some one else had issues with steering box hitting exhaust manifold. I had to grind mine down where it bends right at the steering box. Then I ground the inside edge of the box . That gave me about 1/2" . Hopefully enough to keep it from banging when I hit it hard.

Well it turns out that my shock towers where my upper control arms bolt through is pushing inward with the car on the ground making the top of my wheels "my camber" go negative by a lot! So I have a fix in mind and will hopefully get it stiffened and straightened out by the end of the weekend. Seeing how work is super slow at the shop today I might just go ahead and do it right now. Going to weld stiff channeling on the inside of the shock tower across and around both side with a thick bar and brace it to hopefully decrease the amount of flex it allows. Hopefully it works and it should and will have it fixed for good! Just one more thing do me to do now. Can't wait to take care of all of this stuff and be ready for the dragstripnwhen it opens back up!!!

So I want to put a better rear in with some better gearing and I'm looking at 9". But recently I have come across alot of " 8.8 Explorer" rears and have been reading about them doing research. Most of them are 58" from WMS to WMS, which is what I'm looking for and have disk brakes on them plus they have 3.55, 3.73's with Trac lok. So I'm thinking since they are way more plentiful, apparently as strong, lighter and less power robbing plus already have a nice geared posi and disk brakes, would think be a good swap for my wagon? Any thoughts....

The 8.8 is an excellent alternative for the 9" if you cannot find a decent 9" that is.

The Explorer disc brakes can be used on a large bearing 9" there are a few do it yourself articles on the net to explain the procedure if you want to go that route.

The 8.8 can be very strong but, they are a hassle to change gears in though.

So what your saying is I should go for it lol. I figured I'm not making huge power as of right now and see it as a viable alternative esp because they are the length I need. Plus power disc brakes all around on my wagon it would stop on a dime lol. Plus people want insane money for an open 9" that has drum brakes and needs gone through and don't have the gears I want.

Ya, i would probably put one under if a 9" weren't available. As you have noted that people want an arm and a leg for their 9" housings/gears and especially limited slip units..

Be sure to choose the best gear ratio and check the limited slip out for proper function before buying an 8.8 though.

Is your 8" (that's currently in the wagon) 54" wide measured from backing plate to backing plate? Or?

I definitely WOULD NOT setup a porting polishing station in any place near the furnace due to the flammable properties of the dust. That and the metal dust gets everywhere and loves rusting in places that are hard to reach..

I once set up a porting polishing area in my laundry room years ago. A nice room with white textured Sheetrock....The cast iron dust "found" all of the nail heads and immigrated everyplace in the room and the rust that appeared later sheesh...I even used a vacuum while porting and after.

Furnace is an airtight "Longwood" fuel oil/4' long log burner so not too many places for it to get. Even my cold air return comes from upstairs. No openings to suck into. Blower motor door was super sealed by me last summer when I made my own A/C using artesian spring water from sump pump.. works like a heat pump but doesn't cost me anything to run except for blower. I also have plastic painting sheets on top of all my other things in there and even though it has it's own door on the room I still hang a sheet over the entrance. I use the room for air brushing shirts and tattoo's also. It's plumbed with an air supply from garage compressor. Will keep an eye out for issues though and thanks for the "heads up"!! :)

I added some new pics and bought a Data Logger this morning for it. Now I want to go from my 6AL box to a 7AL-3 box but will have to wait, lol

Take it easy and keep me updated on your progress!!!

Well guys after selling the last early 460 short block that i acquired and searching for months for another one, I finally have found one. Its from a 1969 lincoln and its been sitting in storage for 25 years. Going to take a trip up to New York to pick it up this weekend. And on the way back I am going to stop and pick up an 8.8 rear from an explorer with disk brakes, and 3.73 limited slip gears!! So hopefully within the next month Ill have a new rear with some actual real gears in my wagon and power disk brakes alll around!! Want to make a beastly 460 to replace my 429 as well. that will take a bit more time tho.

block

Hey, if you are looking for another block, lol.... I decided to sell off my D0VE 460-A block. It's the one I pulled. .030 over, o-ringed deck, has the machining from pan rail to mains so it can be 4-bolted. I still have to strip it down to bare block. Going to sell the cast D3VE heads off too. Slightly ported, gasket matched, bigger valves, double springs....
let me know if you or anyone you know is interested. Havent really given $ much thought yet. Been too busy working on other block but will be listing a ton of stuff towards end of month like rocker girdles, main girdle, etc, etc......
If there is anything you are looking for shoot me a PM
Hope all is going well for ya!
Talk to you later,
Auggie
