Hello everyone I have a 1971 429 motor that I am currently installing into my wagon. I know it's not a complete car build up or restore but I have some questions and would like some advice. I have what I think are thunderbird or boss motor mounts. They are the big wide ones that bolt right to the block. And I have bought frame mounts that bolt to the frame. I know I am missing the insulator which I was going to make myself because they are way to expensive for a hunk of metal I can make myself. Anyway I got the engine on the crane last night and lowered it down in my car, which is up on jack stands in my garage. To have my engine down far enough to get the power brake booster on and get the trans to fit as well as the gas pedal z bar to work my block mounts are basically sitting on my frame mounts. My question is how can there be a 4 inch tall insulator???? I'm dumbfounded! So I took the frame mounts off and lowered it in and have it sitting where I want it and it clears everything and I can get the top bolts in the trans. But the frame mounts on the block are about three inches away from the frame!! Does anyone have an pictures of what the mounts all bolted together and in the car look like??? I was going to buy the crites kit but that's 210$!! And it looks like it would make it too tall. My airplanes gonna already be sticking out of the hood. And any pictures of what your 429 looks like in your engine bay, spacing from the firewall and side to side but mostly I just want to see a pic of the engine in a mustang or whatever and see what the mounts look like. That's I appreciate it. Ned d to move past this so I can get going.

Looks like it has seen some moisture, do you still have the other trans or can find a used one for hard parts cheap?

Oh my. That looks as if it was in a flood. That is by far the worst rust that i have witnessed inside of a transmission! I would if possible, replace the core. It's too bad that you don't live closer as i would let you have one of my C6 (385, Short tail) cores cheap.

That sprag assy. bit the dust in a big way didn't it?

Bet someone pressure washed the outside of that transmission. So far what you have shown in the pictures there is no rust where it matters. If that is the extent of the rust it is salvageable. You can bead blast the rust off of what is in the pictures. Now rust inside the drums, in the planetaries, on sealing surfaces would be a different story. If the spools in the valve body are rusted I'd get another valve body.

Your low one way clutch has failed. Not a big deal they sell them. A new one way clutch cost about $12. Get the later style with the plastic cage. You will have to discard the two snap rings to use it. Actually looks like you have the newer style already.

How do the one way clutch inner and out races look?

As for the low/rev clutch return spring and retainer they get bent sometimes during rebuild. All it has to do is keep the springs retained. Yours looks useable. If concerned you can just flatten it back out.

That CL one looks nice and shiny with that new coat of paint. I used to sell used transmissions, would only sell those as good that I knew first hand were good. Was a PITA and worse when you sell them cheap. Everyone is concerned about it not being a good transmission and honestly I can understand why. If I am going to sell one now I will take it apart, go through it and sell it as a rebuilt with a warranty.

He is better off rebuilding what he has and know what is in it. If the surface rust is too much for comfort get a core for $50 - $100 and build that. 4x4 stuff is no issue, just swap the output shaft and tail housing.

every surface in there had corrosion or some kind of rust. all the clutches and gears. its funny you would say that its the worst you"ve ever seen. because that just happens to be my luck lol. why me! i just wanna rebuild it and drive my car lol. everyday i just see it sitting there. anyway that craigslist ad is mine lol. its the last one i bought that was rebuilt but too short. i should have just kept it haha. i cleaned it up and painted it. internals looked great when i opened it up and fluid was fresh as ever. sold it to a new member for his tube chassis car hes building. anyway as far as the roller clutch races they looked fine. it was actually quite easy to take apart. took alot of photos. me and my friend had it apart in a hour with some slacking off. i found a couple of 4x4s that have been rebuilt so thinking about picking one up and switch out the tailshaft. just have to find that deal. yeah that would be nice getting a cheap core. i could use it right about now. and to think i thought i would have this done by the weekend. guess im pushed back a bit. whats the difference in the kits after 1976? my kit is 1977- up. thanks for the replies guys!

Well he is going to scrap it anyway, maybe you can get it for $50 to pay for the tolls and gas. LOL

Carlisle! Used to go there when I was a young man. Nothing like walking miles in the hot sun carrying a bunch of heavy stuff you bought. Best day to go is on Friday. Once went on Sunday, what a waste all the good stuff was gone, but can get deals on junk vendors are tired of lugging around. All the really good stuff changes hands between vendors before the show starts. Knew a guy would rent a space just for that reason.

Now a days between E-bay, Craigs List, and sites like this does not make much sense to go to swap meets except to socialize. Have not been to a swap meet or junk yard in years.

Don't wait too long, cruising season is coming! I actually had my 64 f100 out today to try out my overdrive that I installed over the winter. It was amazing driving 120 km/h and revving 2400rpm, at 100km/h she was 2100 rpm. Now I can cruise with my corvette buddies. :)

Yeah i think ill make a trip down there to get it regardless. Yes carlisle! We live about an hour and a half (hour if you go fast) away. Been going there since I was a kid. My dad is a galxie nut and knows everyone lol. I dabble... we usually go and stay for a couple days every year for spring swap meet and of coarse ford carlisle. Love the burnout contest. Its actually where I got my wagon about four years ago.

So I got the another trans. Took it apart tonight. And everything seems a lot nicer and in way better condition than mine was. But I didn't find some broken stuff. First off I took the pan and valve body out. I immediately found pieces of a broken plastic washer (1st picture). So kept going! When I took the servo out it was filled with sludge. Then I took the pump out and all the forward assembly out. When I got to the sun gear shell I noticed the back side was eaten up and scored. So I took some measurements between the two. Mines on the left and the trans I just picked up is on the right. My clutch pack clearances on the high reverse hub were about 0.109, vs the clutch pack from the new one were about 0.066. So thats about as far as i got tonight. I can go no further now considering I had to return the snap ring pliers I boroughed. Will have to get them tomorrow and finish tear down. Think ill be using a lot of parts from this donor, they are in way better condition than mine. Only thing I'm thinking I can't use is the sungear shell. Any input on where this broken washer came from would be great. Also can I use the band from the new one? It has no heat marks and seems new and smooth on the inside.

Only plastic washer on a C-6 is between the stator support and direct drum and that thrust washer in your hand is metal. It looks like the thrust washer that goes between the sun shell and rear planet. Would explain why the rear planet face is scored up. You likely will need to use a different rear planet and if the sun shell is scored up same deal.

When the washer broke and fell out it likely allowed the direct and forward drums to move around on the stator and lose the ring seal. I'd inspect the drums bushings and sealing surfaces for wear.

If the band is not broke, the lugs are tight, no cracks, and the friction surface looks good reuse it. Clearance on the direct drum has a factory spec. of .022"-.040" so .066" is a bit loose and .109" is a lot. My find some burned up clutches in that drum.

Ah yes I have seen the plastic one. Yeah sungear shell and rear planetary are done for but I can usethe ones out of mine so that's good. Once I get the clutches out ill take a better look at the drums. Got the tools today from my friend. So finish teardown and possible rebuild will commence tonight. Wish I could just ditch work and do my trans but I have some restorations to finish this week. Anyway yes Steve it is metal meant to say that. Figured that's where it came from. Thanks Steve! I'm so excited to get this thing on the road. Called the torque converter company and they should be shipping it out today. Damn near took them a week to send it out. Kind of lame but I'm not done my rebuild so its alright I guess.

Well I'm stuck. I went to put the retainer lock ring on the output shaft and it wouldn't go on. Need like another 1/16 of an inch. I used my output shaft, parking pawl, my case and my housing for rear planetary gears. Only thing I used from the other one in this area is the return spring assembly. I don't know what to do to get this extra clearance to get this clip on. I knew something would go wrong mixing parts. Any help would be great. Gonna talk to my friend tomorrow who does trannys to come look at it. Maybe the block that the five bolts go into for the return spring for the rear is a little thicker? Idk

I got trans assembly blue goo! I put that **** on everything like franks red hot. Anyway there's two thrust washers. One is under the parkibg pawl which I thought was out of place so I took the rear distributor sleeve off and that wasn't it. Then there's one under the hub that butts up against the return spring assembly. Both are gooed and in place. Checked many times. I talked to my friend and he said try standing it up on the tail in like a trash can or something and see if that gives it to me.
