I'm finially getting around to posting my 1993 Foxbody notchback project in the car build up section. I got this little jewel at a yard sale for $300 bucks. At the time the owner told me that it needed a transmission and didn't run. After I got it home I put 5 quarts of transmission fluid in it and proceeded to drive it for 6 months. I also had to change the oil. It was way over filled and it was RED fluid. I guess we all know what he did. Oh well. His ignorance was a great deal for me. Anyway I'll list the mechanicals and post up some pictures. I don't think the pictures are in any particualr order. I'm much further along than this first batch of pictures may suggest. I'll post more pic's later. Below are the motor spec's and mechanicals.

New motor is a 587 cid (9.4 liters). 4.560 bore x 4.5 inch stroke.

RMCompRandy got my pistons shipped out today. They will be here next week and I'll put the motor back together next weekend. The pistons had to be fly cut on top of the old valve reliefs. He was not able to turn the pistons around and cut the other side. I have a set of lightweight J&E pistons that had extra material under the original valve relief. The crown on the opposite side was too thin to cut. No big deal. This should work just fine.

I have also bought for the reassembley:

1) A stage 1 oil pump from Paul Kane. That will be here next week.

2) A new Cloyes Billet double roller timing chain from Summit Racing

3) Full Gasket set from Lem Evans.

I'll be working on the cars electrical system this weekend. I still have lots to do before she will roll on her own. But the list is starting to get shorter and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Short Block Built

I didn't get as much done as I wanted to this weekend. I got sucked into work on both Saturday and Sunday. I did get the short block built however. I got my pistions back from RMCompRandy after being flycut so I was ready for resassembly. I knocked down the edge on the top of the pistoins where my exhaust valves had come in contact with the pistons on my old combination. It was light contact but it did put a bit of a sharp edge on the top of the piston so I got rid of that. I then cleanded the pistons and prepared for reassembly. The pistions went back together with the rods perfectly and the Spirolocks weren't that bad to put back in. My combination used 2 spirolocks per side. 4 altogether per piston. The motor went back together perfectly and then rotated over just fine. Buying the ARP ring compressor for the 4.390 bore was well worth the money. I had complained about the price earlier but after using it, it sure made reassembly MUCH easier. I had been using one of the cheap spring loaded 'crank to compress' ring compressors from Autozone. The ARP unit blew it away. MUCH EASIER and well worth the 56 bucks in my opinion.

Wish I was there to hear it. You going to run it open headers at first? I have some hella funny stories from doing that in the past. Now I like to quiet things down with mufflers so I can hear what is going on with the motor at first........good luck!.......D

Slow Progress...

Well I wanted to get the motor back in the car this weekend. I ran into problems again with my Moroso oil pan. It seems that it was not made for a stroker motor. I now have that pan for sale on the auction block and I'll have to order a new pan that is made for a stroker motor. What a hassle that oil pan has been.

On the bright side I did get the 12 pt ARP head stud kit in this week. I ran a tap through all of the head stud bolt holes and cleanded them out real good. Both with the tap and then compressed air. I then installed the head studs with a big of permatex on the stud threads in the block. The heads then went on and bolted down real nice. This evening I'm going to take the oil pan back off ( I have it bolted on so I could keep the atmosphere out of the block for now) put the lifters in and measure the pushrod length so I can get those ordered. I'll post a picture of the progress this evening.

Checking Pushrod Length

Measuring for correct pushrod length last night was a fiasco. Below are the results. Lem Evans now has 4 individual chromemoly 3/8 pushrods coming to me so I can measure for correct pushrod length. The sizes that I am getting are 9.1,9.2,9.3 & 9.4 inches.

This was the result of 800#'s of open seat pressure. OOppss... Live and learn.

Hey Chris don't they have some lightweight springs your supposed to use for checking pushrod length? ;)

Just " one more thing" that I'm sure you know-as the pushrods get longer, the threads on the rocker stud get shorter.IMO you need at least 7/16in of thread grip length in the adjusting nut. Some nuts do not have threads all the way to the end. Some times you need longer rocker studs.

#469 ·
I agree with you. Especially with the seat pressures that I have. I'm not using the nuts that came with my Crane Gold Race Roller Rockers. I have a Jomar stud girdle that came with the attaching nuts. They are super long for the stud girdle and have LOTS of thread length. Hopefully I'll have a full 7/16 or more thread space on the rocker stud to screw them to. Thanks for the input.

Kind of makes you wonder why they say it is clearanced for a 4.5 stroke crank when it clearly isn't. They also say that it is clearanced for a 4.5 stroke crank with O.E.M. rods. I don't think there are OEM rods that fit a 4.5 stroke crank. In my limited experience I have never seen a 6.605 rod on a 4.5 stroke crank. But who knows. Maybe they are out there.

Address

So sounds like to much fun to me! I have an 86 notch with a 460 and a glide. I have a manual brake pedal that I will send you. It bolts in, in the stock position with stock parts. If you check the steering collum support you will find 2 sets of holes. The holes the power brake pedal came out of, and directly below about 1 1/4 inch below, are another set. These holes are for the manual brake pedal. If you need any thing, just let me Know.

One thing after another...

After measuring for the correct pushrod length this weekend I decided to put my new timing chain on. Once I got in there this is what I found. My cam pin had broken. The gear never spun on the cam but it was just a matter of time. It is looking like taking the motor apart for the new heads turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I'm now looking at my options to either get this fixed ( and double pinned) or just get a custom spec cam for my application. I'll kee you posted...

The rest of the pin in the cam:

Why is it always something??
I'm thinking this will just be a great excuse to get a new cam!! :D

OK.. More about measuring for the correct pushrod length. Below you see a picture of the pattern made on the lash caps of an intake and exhaust valve. They appear to be pretty good and centered to me. The only problem is that both of these wear patterns were made with a 9.4 inch pushrod. I'm pretty sure that the P-51 heads should use different length pushrods. Anybody have any comments about what is going on here? Should I go with 9.4 length pushrods for all valves or do I have something going on that is wrong here?

Custom Cam & Oil Pan

I have a custom cam coming from Comp Cams. One of the forum members helped me with the spec's on it. I sent Comp Cams the new Cloyes billet cam gear as well so it can be double pinned with the cam.

Since I am now in "wait" mode I stripped my oil pan to bare metal and painted it last night. I also painted my short block. Below are a few pictures of the results. I have some more Moroso stickers that will go back on the oil pan. I just haven't put them on yet.

Nice build, I've been looking at this thread for a while! I'm on a similar path with a 93 coupe. I'm building a 521 for it. I feel your pain with your diverticulitis attack. I just had the re-section surgery in January after 14 years of living with it. I was all set to build a FE stroker where my experience was. When I was in the hospital, I decided to go 385 (damn that Dilaudid)! Anyways, I set my sights and bought a 460 and C6 on ebay 3 hours away 2 days after I got out of the hospital. My dad, bless his heart, he is 76, piloted my truck and I up to get it two weeks after surgery. A few days later I was in the garage in pajamas with air tools tearing it down. I have most of my parts now and the block is in the shop waiting for me to receive my rotating assembly. I already tore down my coupe last year. I'm almost healed and waiting to start my coupe journey! I hope your diverticulitis does not get any worse! Iv'e learned a lot from following your build!

#488 ·
Yep.. diverticulitis can be miserable. But is sounds like I didn't have it like you did. Glad to hear you are over the worst of it.

This build of mine has really gotten out of hand. But hopefully when done it will be worth all of the blood, sweat and money (No tears. Those will come if I hit the concrete wall!!). I'm no expert. I'm just making it up as I go along. But if there is anything I can answer for you feel free to run it by me.

...And thanks for checking out the thread. I should have another update soon. My new cam has shipped and it should be here by the weekend. I'm going to try to get the motor back together and in the car this weekend. Time will tell. Hopefully I don't run into any more problems. Or areas to spend more money for no apparent reason!! :)

#496 ·
You are close but not on the money. I never thought I would be one of the guys that doesn't reveal cam specs but... I had one of the senior members of the forum spec out the cam for me and he asked that I not make the specs public. I can tell you the maker is CompCams and the size is large by huge and the duration @ .50 is less than 360 degrees. ... But not by much! :)

#497 ·
You should have said i was right on the money, for all the forum members, then i would have started my new buisness as an ARTIST.........."BULLS**T" artist..........LOL.

Hurry up and SLAP that cam in, turn the key, transbrake 6000rpm and do a back filp on launch....lol
