Overall Best Cam for STOCK EFI 460 Engine

I know there are tons of "which cams are best" threads out there, but for about the last two weeks I've been researching which cam would be best for a STOCK 97 460, and have come up thousands of combinations for everyone's specific engine setup, but none for just a stock 460. What I'm wondering is what would be the best cam (lift, duration, etc....) without hurting low end torque. I understand that if you go with too big of a cam at low rpm you'll get valve overlap which will hurt torque. Is there a bit of room to increase the cam without getting valve overlap? Not looking for big power, just something that would keep my torque from dropping off severely at 3500rpm.

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

In the case of an EFI motor the liming factor is what the computer will tolerate. EFI motors are notoriously picky critters. They'll puke an electronic hairball at the slightest provocation.

IIRC Randy, Dave, and Scott have all built EFI motors with success. They should be able to give you some direction.

Thanks, although the computer will not be a problem. I've converted over to SEFI and run a fully standalone AEM EMS computer. I just need to know what cam would be beneficial for a stock setup. Once I find out, I'll be able to tune it for whatever it needs.




Went from 321 torque, to 329, to 341 just from tuning. Not bad IMO considering it's got 35's along with stock exhaust manifolds and cat.

You said you have converted to SEFI and a computor isn't a problem so, now you can use whatever cam you choose if you are able to tune the system.
Whether using EFI or carb, any camshaft CAN be used.
If you are skilled with tuning it then for pure torque, I like the CompCams #34-223-4; 255DEH.

I was doing some research on that particular cam and came across this...anyone else heard of that happening with a CompCams Cam? (post #4)

Ok cool. I just don't want to have to upgrade my valve train or anything like that.....i didn't know how big you could go before the valves would hit the pistons. basically i just want to go with the biggest cam i can without having to change anything else....

cams break down like that from improper break-in... usually either too high spring pressure (if you are going dual spring take out the inners for break-in) or lack of zinc in modern oils (they sell zddp additive for break-in) or they dont do the rev guidelines for break-in (bring it immediately to 2000rpm and bounce it from 2000-2500rpm for 20-30 min... no idling/driving)

AS been said, porting the lower intake manifold has a big benefit. It is terrible in stock form for anything other than "off idle" and highway cruising engine speeds.

The Lunati cam #06169 shifts the power a LITTLE higher than that Comp grind. Both can use all stock valve train.
